Hi! We’re glad that your camper has joined us for the Whitman National
Debate Institute. We want to provide helpful information, so, here goes .
. .
DROPPING OFF YOUR CAMPER?
|
·
We recommend you arrive at Whitman between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. on
Sunday, July 20 (unless your camper is a work scholarship student—you should
arrive by 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 19). Campers can also arrive on Saturday
from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday. Arrival at these times will give your
camper time to check-in, move in to his or her room, and begin the camp
ready to go.
·
For registration, go to Hunter Foyer. Details are available at: Travel Info
·
NEED A PLACE
TO STAY WHEN YOU DROP OFF YOUR CAMPER?
Walla Walla has
some nice hotels. Information at: hotels.htm
We can also rent you a room for $30. The room has two twin beds, desks,
cabinets. You’ll need to bring your own bedding. Our bathrooms are setup
for one person to use the shower at a time so you maintain your privacy and
we do our very best to place you in a separate section of the residence
hall from the students.
PICKING UP YOUR CAMPER AT THE END OF THE INSTITUTE?
·
The times noted below will give your camper a chance to pack,
checkout and say goodbye.
·
Go to Lyman or Douglas Hall to pickup your camper (same place you
dropped him/her off)
·
For picking up Two Weekers, arrive anytime on Friday, August 1.
·
For picking up One and Three-Weekers, arrive anytime Friday,
August 8.
TRANSPORTATION TO AND FROM THE AIRPORT OR BUS STATION
·
We will work with you and your camper to make sure he or she gets
picked up and taken to the airport or bus station at the right time.
We pickup people at Walla Walla airport for free on the
designated dates (you can get a taxi for other dates for about $12).
We pickup people at the Pasco airport or bus
station for $20 one way on the designated dates at specific times. Full
details at Plane-Bus Pickup Detailed Information
·
If you have concerns, questions, changes about your camper’s
travel plans or actually whatever, please e-mail Jim at

THINGS TO DO WHEN VISITING WALLA WALLA
Check out the great wineries in the Walla Walla area. Check out information at
this site: www.winesnw.com/walla.html
Visit the Whitman Mission and learn about the history that
formed the basis for our school’s name. Located about 4 miles west of
Walla Walla
right off Highway 12, the mission is an interesting visit. See information
at: www.nps.gov/whmi/
Take a walk around Whitman’s campus. I recommend walking along the
creek that runs through campus, check out Ankeny field, the exteriors of
Memorial building with the clock tower as well as the Library (with the
huge windows looking out at Ankeny) and the new Science building, and go
inside Reid Center, the campus center right across the street from Hunter
where you checked in (where food will be served during camp). I think you
will agree our campus is beautiful and well worth a look. www.whitman.edu
Consider visiting downtown Walla Walla. Downtown Walla Walla, a Sunset magazine winner for
best small town downtown, is really cool. Check out the art galleries,
wineries, coffee shops, Macy’s, Merchants, and its small town yet
contemporary feel. Parking should be no problem. Information at: www.downtownwallawalla.com/
GETTING FOOD AND SUPPLIES IN TOWN
·
Our newly renovated downtown Safeway is located on Rose Street a
few blocks northwest of campus.
·
A huge Albertsons is available down the street east on Isaacs (on
the east end of town, about 2 miles from campus).
·
Kentucky Fried Chicken and Taco Bell are on Rose Street about a mile and a half
west from campus (Rose Street
is the west side continuation of Isaacs
street).
·
McDonalds, Burger King, Arby’s, another Taco Bell, and Wendy’s are
on Isaac Street about two miles east of campus.
·
For finer dining, try the Marcus Inn (high quality meals), El
Sombrero (great Mexican), the Whitehouse Crawford (4 star meals), the
Golden Horse (Chinese), Creektown Café (contemporary food), the Backstage
Bistro (upscale ribs, steaks, chicken), Grapefields (upscale metro food,
good wine selection), Bangkok 103 (Thai), Applebee’s (American grill), or
the Homestead (traditional upscale meals). Ask Jim for directions or go to
this web page: www.sourceguides.com/restaurants/Washington/WallaWalla/WallaWallaRestaurants.html
·
Staples, Albertsons, Rite-Aid, and K-Mart are all two miles east
of campus on Isaacs Street.
CONTACTING YOUR CAMPER DURING CAMP
·
CALLING: Jim will email your camper’s room phone number to you
(he’ll also tell you what room number your camper is in). If you come to
campus, he’ll also give you a print-out with the phone and room number.
·
Good times to call: It can be hard to reach campers as students
are in labs or at meals for almost the entire day but here are times that
are generally good: 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., 6:45 to 7:15 p.m., 10:45 p.m.
to 12:15am plus Saturday evening and Sunday morning.
·
Problems getting a hold of your camper? Just e-mail Jim Hanson and
tell him that you want your camper to contact you. He’ll then make sure
your camper is personally contacted to get a hold of you. Jim’s email is hansonjb@whitman.edu
SENDING MAIL TO YOUR CAMPER
DURING CAMP
Send mail to this
address:
Jim Hanson
Please give to (camper’s name)
345 Boyer Avenue
Whitman College
Walla Walla WA 99362
Jim will e-mail
you to confirm that your mail has been received and delivered to your
camper.
NOTE THESE THINGS ABOUT SENDING POSTAL MAIL:
·
MAIL TAKES AN EXTRA DAY TO GET
TO WALLA WALLA.
Always add one day for the time it takes to mail something via the U.S.
postal service. For example, first class mail usually takes three to four
days to get to Walla Walla.
·
LAST DAY TO MAIL 2 WEEKERS:
MON. JULY 28.
Please do not mail items to two week campers after Monday, July 28 unless
you use one day express shipping (NOTE: U.S. Postal service “Priority mail”
takes three to four days to get to Walla Walla--NOT one to two days as is
typical).
·
LAST DAY TO MAIL 3 and 1
WEEKERS: MON. AUGUST 4. Please do not mail items to three week campers after Monday,
August 4 unless you use one day express shipping--again, priority mail does
NOT take just 2 days to get to Walla Walla; it takes 3 to 4 days.
