Participant comments

We hope you will join us for the 2010 WNDI, one of the nation's premier debate institutes.

Comments from the 2009 Surveys:

I loved my aff lab. We had so much fun learning together, but a few of us also became good friends. The environment made it easy to learn and cultivate relationships.

My interaction with my lab leaders.

Small labs, relaxed.

I loved all of the friends I made within my own lab and other labs and I really liked how helpful and nice the lab leaders were.

The fun environment and educational purpose.

I liked the lectures on philosophers, theorists, and political concepts because they taught me very interesting things that I don't learn in school and they made concepts I may have been familiar with very easy to understand.

Other than games of frisbee, I learned a lot and that was cool.

Lab leaders were awesome.

WNDI was very intensive and the knowledge you gain is immense. Also, the PICNICS!!! duh :)

Lab leaders were great.

I liked the lectures, and the coaches, and the people here. It was a really fun experience.

Extensive training and practice within the 2 week program as well as excellent accommodations.

Jim and his entire staff are can do people and make it happen.  They adjust to every need want and desire of any reasonable proportion.

IT WAS AWESOME! I made a lot of new friends and learned a lot of new stuff for debate.  I feel like I grew as a debater and as a person.

I learned a whole LOT of philosophy which I love. I got a lot of great criticism, and I think I grew as a debater.

The relationships I built with people and the connection I felt with the lab leaders.

The educational value.

The depth of knowlege coupled with chillness in the lab leaders

I really enjoyed all of the lab time, due to my lab leaders.  I truly believe that Katie and Jonathan were the best and most helpful lab leaders, and that they provided me with enough information to substantially increase my debating ability.  Katie was always on top of things when it came to drills and making sure we were improving; Jonathan provided great lectures that helped really explain things.  Also, he provided some good eye candy.

Like it all. Great lectures and helpful feedback.

Focus on improvement of your debate abilities

The practice debates and information are very helpful.

The people, awesome lab leaders, food, quality of teaching, relaxing environment, lab rooms, everything...  I would come again if I could...

I liked the smaller lab size the Third Week. It was also nice to have a larger leader to student ratio, I felt I got more lab leader attention.

i really liked my lab a lot. Good people and they made lab fun but also helped when i needed it. I also liked the picnic food the third week and i also liked the one on one time that we got.

I really liked the Staff vs. Student drills. They were so helpful in refining your debate skills and really getting down to it. Plus the one on one help was really great.

I liked the staff-student drills, they were really helpful, to get on-the-spot, direct feedback about how to correctly make arguments. I liked the lots of research, too, that was great.

I liked the one on one experience.

I learned a lot more, I liked that because I like learning

That if finally rained and the lectures were the only positive part of the third week. The third week was supposed to "make all the difference" but the only part where I felt like I was getting an upper hand was from the lectures.

the one on one emphasis and the skill building as well as in depth resources

less intense  more of a do what you want.. like make blocks, create neg strats.. instead of having it be like cutting a tx file that you have no intention of running.  so i guess you can call that using your time the way you want it to be used appropriately and efficiently.

i liked the camp being smaller. just gave it a more intimate feel. i also liked the tournament and thought it was very well run.

Everyone!!   Rob was especially helpful when i was not feeling well and was also very helpful when i had questions about coming to Whitman.    Nick Griffin was also very willing to talk about his experience at Whitman, how much he liked it,  and how much he liked the debate team. He was also a very good driver and i learned a lot from talking to him in the Shuttle.    I would also like to thank you, i am assuming jim is reading this, for meeting with me, it was really helpful,    I am very happy i came to the WNDI and wish i had another year to come back! :)

i liked that the people were all very supportive and encouraging. and i liked playing ultimate frisbee at the picnics. also the food was amazing in the cafeteria. at the tournament the judges gave really good rfd's which i felt like i learned A LOT from

i liked the more in depth lectures that we had.     and of course the tournament was fun.

WND is a very well run, well communicated, and well organized camp. My compliments. I would also like to compliment one of the LD Judges that came and judged fro PoFo. Although he sis not vote in my team's favor or tell us his name, he was a fantastic judge. In his critiques, he said exactly what we had said, what was wrong with some parts of it, and why and how we could improve it. He was an excellent judge.

It's really funny. They're competitive during debates, but right after they're really easygoing. LOL

Lectures/lab time.  Meeting and socializing with new friends.  Dramatic chipmunk video clip...SO FUNNY  Brie.. because she helped me so much and made it possible for me and my partner to get to the semi finals as novices. She is the best!!  Nigel for beING SUPER hilarious and bringing some fun in to the rather stressful camp.  Thnx for being so cool!

mike and joe because they were amazing.

Mike and Joe were funny and awesome, they helped us but still made us do work on our own. And they had some really, really awesome drills that I'd like to use on my own team.   The people I met were AMAZING. I loved my lab. After a week they felt like my best friends. It was really hard to leave. I wish there were two weeks for PF!  Overall, I definitely feel confident going into my debate season.

I liked the attitudes of Mike, Joe and Brie.  They were really cool and gave absolutely terrific feedback!

Comments from the 2008 Surveys:

I liked that we were in small labs where we could easily get help instead of waiting for one lab leader to attend to twenty kids before answering my specific questions. I also liked that the campus is centralized and easy to get around.

My Lab Leader Nicholas!

I learned a lot!!!

I liked the learning.

I liked how fun was balanced with work, and that I learned a lot

The lab leaders, and the fun I had with meeting everyone!

The people and the lectures!

I learned so much not only for my local circuit but also the national circuit. I also loved having college students help us because they were closer to our age and taught us all sorts of out of the box ideas that our coaches would never think of.

I really liked the community created by the WNDI. I felt at home the entire time. I also liked the comprehensive curriculum of the camp for lectures and overviews. If I wasn't graduating next summer, I would definitely want to come back!

ALL the lab leaders.

I liked the Lab Leaders.

The information I gained through labs and lectures.

I learned a shitload of really good things to use in debate, made some cool friends, got to talk to lab leaders alot, got exposed to lots of new and really cool perspectives and world views.  I also thought that the lab system worked really well.  IT had a good leader student ratio, things got done and you had people you could get to know

I liked the Labs/the Picnic

I liked the Labs

Learning.

Everything was amazing!

Meeting other debators and learning about theory.

The first week was rough but the second week was a blast! :)

having a good debate round and winning.

The sheer volume of things I learned and the great friends I made.

I loved the lab leaders!

The Environment: The People, The Teachers, The Atmosphere...

The people, the staff the location and the labs

the rounds and critiques

Friendly staff, really helped me not be homesick.

I liked the people most of all. I felt that WNDI attracted an amazing group of people. In terms of the actual camp itself, I really enjoyed the individual instruction.

Getting rid of addendums was a great idea. The staff, emphasis on drills, and facilities were tremendous.

The experiences that i know i'll carry with me for a long time.

The learning to evidence ratio. It's perfect.

The girls

Lab Leaders were cool to talk to in general, as well as extraordinarily well informed about their topics.  I really learned a lot from this camp

Debating and speed drills

So far, I've gotten a ton of practice in-round and on specific arguments in small labs. I know that's how you describe your camp on the website, but most camps say that. Yours is one of the only ones that really follows through.

I met good friends.

I like meeting people from around the US, and feel like I have made some good friends.

Probably the food and the large rooms, besides the debates themselves.

the amount of work was good, i liked the schedule.

It had good lectures, lab leaders, and rfd.

The people and experience.

The fact that I learned SO much in the past 2 weeks it is amazing. I loved working in our labs- it was great!

The people you meet, the education, and the great staff!

meeting new people and learning alot.

Nates lectures and his lab

Intimate environment with cool people and lab leaders.

the overall education was the greatest aspect of this camp. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The qualified counselors, evidence, small lab ratio's.

So much fun!!!

Learning about debate strategy, which will be the most beneficial to us win we go back to our circuit. I will definitely use the evidence this year.

the strategy was the greatest aspect about this camp; I feel as though my entire perspective of debate has been molded for the better . . .

the frisbee!!!! and the people

Meeting new, like minded people.

Loved all the person help and explanation. Also loved the fact that we didn't have to research any.

Emphasis on skill rather than research.

I liked the people

Instruction was very good.

I enjoyed how 1-on-1 staff was with everyone trying to help them with whatever it need be. There were a lot of aspects i improved on that i didnt even realized needed I was struggling with. I feel like my debating skills are much better now. The staff was super helpful and although they seemed scary at first, they are all incredible people that are just like us. Debaters. And super fun.

meeting other debaters, learning so much, making really good friends, etc.

hanging out with other debaters. staff was helpful and friendly. i feel like a good debater now!

The staff. They were all friendly and very assessable. Also, the schedule was efficient, but not overbearing.

Everything that didn't involve the after 10:30 p.m. rules, I really like playing with the ducks/ sitting near the library or fountains

The one-on-one work with the lab leaders

Comments from the 2007 Surveys:

  • I think the environment of the WNDI is drastically different than the other camp I went to previously. When i walked into my lab there, I felt scared and wasn't sure if I’d like lab. The staff at the WNDI are a lot friendlier and more helpful when answering questions (debate/life/college/etc.)
I was expecting to feel trapped inside of a small town for three weeks, but it was just the opposite, it only dawned on me how 'small' Walla Walla was when I was leaving. A lot of (city) people might choose another camp over WNDI because of this misperception. I'll have to do more thinking, but there isn't something about the WNDI that I didn’t enjoy (that I can think of right now).
  • The staff and the bonding created between the lab and our initial leaders. Also, the knowledge that infiltrated my mind. and, James and Joe being here. I think you should hire them both next year
  • It attracts good debaters; nice campus; nice evidence provided
  • The new friends and instructors
  • I like the environment. It helps create a serious atmosphere
  • the friends i made
  • The one-on-one attention. The breaks between cards and case writing to go to lectures.
  • The staff was amazing
  • We were able to have a lot of fun with the other students and with staff while still learning a lot about debate; it was a really good learning environment.
  • The atmosphere. The level of education i got.
  • The computers.
  • The time we start and end is nice. Not too early and not too late. Also the friendly staff members are good.
  • knowing that i was not the only novice in the world.
  • Lab leaders
  • The environment.  I was able to learn a lot, yet still have fun.  There was a good balance between debate and other things.  I really liked the picnics as well.
  • It taught a lot and had some hardcore parts, but the picnics were really fun and offered lots of things to do. The environment was very welcoming and the staff were WONDERFUL.
  • THe close knit community
  • Everything was really great. I liked the practice debates before the camp tournament a lot.
  • Small aff lab, good lab leaders, smaller lectures
  • freedom. time off but not the entire day.
  • the friends
  • The atmosphere. The lab leaders were awesome, and the campus is great. We got great evidence and great help from everyone.
  • I liked that it catered to every person's need. strategy, skills, drills, lectures all helped in improving a debater. Also lab leaders were interactive, fun, and awesome people to meet. Another thing I really liked was the college debate lecture. I liked how all the college graduates told us about their experience and really inspired me to think about continuing on with debate even after high school. Another great thing was how you had the Whitman College Administrator "staff person" come and talk to us about colleges and what it takes for a student to do both debate in college and gave us really informative facts about applying to collge, what your GPA needs to be, and how he answered all our concerns about college. It really was a valuable lecture that day. :)
  • It gave a taste of different parts of debate, especcially in a population where most of the kids have been doing this for over two years.  It gave my partner and I goals to reach and prepared us a little better for Open level debate, as we were in Novice last year.
  • It is really nice at whitman. And the dorms are nice.
  • The staff are really nice and know a lot.
  • The labs, especially the aff labs, gave the opportunity for good, one-on-one assistance and learning, and most of the lectures were very informative and helpful.
  • The staff..the research..the judges..the management..everything
  • The staff were awesome.
  • debating
  • The evidence and the fact were not treated like were in the army
  • The people and lab leaders
  • I liked how balanced everything was. There was a lot of work, we also got free-time in the evenings which gave us some time to relax. :]
  • I really enjoyed the lectures and how critically the staff looked at our rounds and drills. I think I have learned more in the past week and however many days about policy debate than I have in the past year.
  • I thought that WNDI provide the best services.  I like how there are shuttle driving debaters from camp to the airport.  Also, the food, housing, and the lectures provided were among the greatest.  The lectures were so great that I learned more in the first week of camp than what I learned from a whole year of debating.
  • I like the campus and the environment set up by the staff.
  • I liked the one-on-one attention I received. Being able to talk to my lab leaders about any argument whenever is simply unbeatable. The lectures were also very good how you gave an explanation for a while and then a demo debate.
  • the K was pretty well integrated into debate, Sam Allen!
  • Everything, it was amazingly structured. I have been to Oregon and Stanford before this, and WNDI was the best by far.
  • The people and pingpong.
  • The teachers
  • Close environment, good staff
  • What i liked most was the emphasis on strategy and the speaking portion of debate. The fact that drills and debates were more of a priority than cutting cards is probably the most effective way of teaching debate in the NW. I liked the fact that our evidence was cut by lab leaders and college debaters and ensuring quality. And, i really liked how we had enough free time to relax, but not enough to make this feel like some sort of weird, expensive academic vacation.
  • The staff was great--you can tell they did their work.  The evidence was aplenty and distributed in an organized way.   The food was pretty good and mealtimes were at good times.  We had more free time than I had anticipated.  The rules weren't strict.  It was a super learning experience. I am glad I came and can't wait to share all my stuff I got here with people from my own school.
  • robby white, and hot staff members like luke and some other people
  • I liked the fact that we got to switch from lab to lab.  I felt that it exposed us to a number of different perspectives.
  • Meeting new people
  • Sam Allen and Rob Olsen and Ben Meiches and Candi Kissinger
  • Sam Allen, Rob Olsen, and Mike Meredith!
  • I loved the lab leaders and how much I learned
  • The small group learning environment
  • I don't really have any other debate camp experience to compare it to, but I really liked it, I really felt like the staff cared about my success and gave awesome feedback.
  • The teachers are always willing to help.
  • The college debaters and the knowledge they brought.
  • Awesome staff. including the RA's Joe Allen and James Culmer
  • it was so much fun, the campus is beautiful and everyone is really friendly and nice
  • I really enjoyed having spencer as a lab leader and thought that he was definitely best for the position. Also i thought that the amount of time we had between activities was perfect.
  • Everything
  • Practice debates and tournaments
  • Jim knows how to run a camp - he thought of everything from postcards to family, free long-distance upon arrival, "fun" activities like movies and picnics, and birthday parties. When I mentioned that I might like to apply for Scholars, he emailed me to remind me to apply. If there's a problem, I know he'll hear about it (and probably send out a late-night email to respond within 2 minutes). I've been to a few camps, and there's no director as hands-on and accessible as Jim, which is much appreciated.
  • It was all very fun
  • Good atmosphere and discussions of debate.
  • Scholars
