I)     Introduction

A)    How many people here in the past month have drank beer for the purpose of inebriation?

1)     Good amount of the class – Here’s the problem

2)     Low amount of the class – Well, then you’ll understand the point of my speech

3)     Give out beers and take picture

B)    I’ve done a few years of solid research into alcohol consumption VISUAL

C)    As a college, alcohol is a major factor in social situations across campus

D)   Therefore, I believe that we should slow alcohol consumption, as it is a social problem.

 

II)   It lowers inhibitions and makes people do things they normally would not.

A)    ‘Beer Goggles’ VISUALS

1)     This will be defined as a .10 BAC

2)     At this stage, a person is unable to walk a straight line, catch a ball, or touch his or her nose.[1]

3)     If a person is unable to walk a straight line they will be unable STYLE

(a)   To tell exactly what a person looks like

(b)   To be in complete control of their actions

(c)   To be in complete control of their words

4)     This stigma leads to many bad choices which lead to the morning thought of “Oh crap…”

B)    Finishing the night

1)     You have several options, you may: VISUALS

(a)   Go to the bathroom just about anywhere

(b)   Boot just about anywhere

(c)   Wake up with just about anyone

(d)   Not remember a thing

2)     Sounds like fun huh?

 

III) It affects groups of people

A)    Drinking catches on when you get to college

1)     How many people here did not drink until they got to college?

2)     In a national survey, only 1/4 of high school students admits to binge drinking, while 52 percent of college students admit to binge drinking.[2] 

3)     Binge drinking in this statistic is defined as drinking more than five beers in one night over the past two weeks.

B)    Possible Solutions – Responsible Drinking

1)     Drink within a group of people you trust VISUAL

2)     Make sure one person isn’t drunk

3)     Carry around picture of ideal mate; ask hookup “Do you look like this?” VISUAL

4)     Do not take pictures… VISUAL

5)     Drink Responsibly

 

IV) On a serious note, binge drinking in a college atmosphere can be dangerous Interest

A)"36,000 of the nation's 12 million undergraduates will ultimately die from alcohol-related causes while in school. This is more than the number who will get MAs and PhDs combined." [3]

B) While 52 percent of college students binge drink, only 34 percent of their non-college counterparts do.[4]

a)     This is directly related to being free of parental control

b)     And the insecurity of the new social situation

C) According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the four leading injury-related causes of death among youths under the age of 20 are motor vehicle crashes, homicides, suicides, and drowning. Alcohol is involved in many of these deaths.[5]

 

V)    Conclusion

A)    “Friends don’t let friends beer goggle”

B)    Binge drinking increase almost 3 fold from high school to college

C)    Remember to leave the camera out of the hands of sober people while drinking VISUAL

D)   In conclusion, I hope this humorous look at drinking with a serious stress on binge drinking will cause you to lower the amount of drinking you participate in.  (Bring up MIPs with beer.)
