Accessing Lexis-Universe, Infotrac, Ingenta Off-Campus

First, Setup your Browser to use a Proxy Server to access Whitman

You need to do the below steps but you only need to do this once.

·        NOTE: If you experience problems connecting to the Internet after setting up your proxy server, undo these actions

·        NOTE THIS: You cannot use the Proxy Server with some Internet Service Providers (ISP’s). Some work, others don’t. AT & T and MSN usually work; America Online does NOT work—you’ll need to connect to the internet a different way in order to get Access to Lexis, Infotrac, etc.

THE FOLLOWING WORKS FOR DSL, CABLE MODEM, AS WELL AS MODEMS but again AOL and a few others don’t work.

FOR INTERNET EXPLORER—OR MAXTHON WEB BROWSER

1.     In Internet Explorer, click Tools, Internet Options (In Maxthon, click Options, Internet Options)

2.     Click the Connections tab

3.     Click the name of your ISP in the “dial-up settings”

4.     Click the “settings” button to the right

5.     Click automatic configuration script and type or paste in this to the address line: http://proxy.whitman.edu/proxy.pac

6.     Click okay

7.     Now, click the LAN settings button in the lower right

8.     Click automatic configuration script and type or paste in this to the address line (doing the same thing you did for the ISP settings): http://proxy.whitman.edu/proxy.pac

9.     Click okay

10.  Click okay in the next dialogue box; you’re done

FOR FIREFOX—NOTE, WE RECOMMEND FIREFOX IF YOU USE A MACINTOSH

1. Click Tools, Options, Choose General on the left, Click Connection Settings . . .

2. In the Automatic Proxy Configuration at the bottom, type or paste in this to the address line: http://proxy.whitman.edu/proxy.pac

3. Then Click Okay, Okay, and you are done.

According to Matt Schissler, Safari does work if you do this:

1. Open system preferences

2. Click on the Network icon/show Built-in Ethernet

3. Click on Proxies/configure using a PAC file

4. Paste in: http://proxy.whitman.edu/proxy.pac
5. Click apply.

Second, Access Lexis or Infotrac or Ingenta

After setting up your browser, each time you want to access Lexis, Infotrac, or Ingenta, do the following:

1. Go Online

For example, open up MSN and connect.

2. Open up Internet Explorer

3. Click the Lexis, Infotrac, Ingenta, etc. link on the Whitman web pages just like you would if you were on campus.

www.whitman.edu/rhetoric/000team.htm  (and then click research links)

You will get a dialogue box; type in the following:

Proxy User Name: xxx

Proxy Password: xxx
Contact Jim at hansonjb@whitman.edu to get this user name and password

You’re now ready to use Lexis-Universe, Infotrac, Ingenta, etc.!
