HOW TO USE INGENTA

1. Click our research page link to the Ingenta page.

2. Do your search. You can use Boolean searches such as “and” “or.” You can’t use “near” or “w/15” type searches.

Note: The advanced search gives you more options including dates.

3. Click the full text button on the article. Click the display PDF button to view the article.

What if there is no PDF button and it says “Sorry, you’re not a subscriber”? If so, the article is not online for us. Go to the next set of instructions on how to get articles that aren’t online.

4. Click the tab at the top of your search results page where it says “Fax/Ariel.” This will give you articles that aren’t online but may still be valuable. Go to the next set of instructions for how to get articles that aren’t online.

HOW TO GET ARTICLES THAT AREN’T ONLINE

1. Click mark for articles that aren’t available online.

2. After clicking mark on all the articles you want, click the marked list button on the left.

3. MAKE SURE YOU CHECK EACH INGENTA ARTICLE; it is a huge waste of resources to have the interlibrary loan person have to email you back and tell you the article is available here on campus. To do this:

·       Open a separate browser and go to our team’s Research page and go to the Online Catalog for books and journals.

·       Type in the journal name for each article you want and see if our school has the journal and VOLUME for the article you want.

4. If the article is available here on campus--make a note to yourself to get it at the library and DELETE it on your Ingenta marked list by clicking the delete button next to the article.

5. If the article is not available here on campus and AFTER you’ve found all the articles that aren’t available on campus, do this:

·       Click the email button in the upper right of the marked Ingenta list

·       On the page that pops up, type in the following:

·       Send to: ill@whitman.edu

·       Subject: put your full name and then “please get these articles”--make sure you put in your name; if it isn’t there, you won’t get a response.

·       Click Send

·       Jen Donaldson will get back to you with the article within two working days. She will email you at your Whitman account.
