RHETORIC 121: FUNDAMENTALS OF DEBATE

Your grade is based on completing the following items.

 

1. ATTEND CLASS SESSIONS WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2 THROUGH WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 23.
The class sessions are Monday and Wednesday, 4:15 to 6:15pm.

 

2. SUBMIT ONE RESEARCH ASSIGNMENT BY THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 17.
The standards for completing a research assignment will be given to you. Typically, it is a 3-5 page outline with arguments supported by researched materials.

 

3. SUBMIT 20 EXTEMP ARTICLES BY THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 17.
You will be given an Extemp Assignment including the standards for completing extemp articles.

 

4. PARTICIPATE AT THE PLU TOURNAMENT (FRI. SEPT. 26 1pm TO SUN. Nite SEPT. 28) IF CHOSEN.
IF NOT CHOSEN, COMPLETE AN ADDITIONAL RESEARCH ASSIGNMENT AND 20 EXTEMP ARTICLES (BY THURSDAY OCTOBER 1).


5. PARTICIPATE AT THE INTRAMURAL COMPETITION ON DECEMBER 4, 4:20PM TO 6PM

·        121 students who do not attend the class regularly, do their practice, and complete their research assignments and extemp articles, may not receive an A.

 

Note: You must be enrolled in Rhetoric 121, 221, 222, or 401/402 in order to participate in the Whitman Forensics program and participation at tournaments is dependent on following the Team Participation Guidelines.

 


RHETORIC 221: INTERCOLLEGIATE PARLIAMENTARY DEBATE AND SPEAKING EVENTS

Course Expectations

This course involves preparing, practicing, and competing in parliamentary debate, impromptu or extemp, and assisting the forensics program including with tournaments that we host. Your grade is based on completing the following items.

 

·        ATTEND THE THURSDAY CLASS SESSION EACH WEEK, 4:30 TO 5:45PM

Be at the meeting and arrive on time.

 

·        CHECK YOUR E-MAIL EACH DAY
Check and respond to e-mail messages at least once a day.

·        COMPETE IN PARLIAMENTARY DEBATE AND EXTEMP OR IMPROMPTU

·        3 TIMES COMPLETE A PARLI CASE AND 3 TIMES COMPLETE EXTEMP ARTICLES
PARLI CASE: Create a MS Word document with 1) GOV: a parli case with an outlined set of arguments, add-ons and answers to expected opp. arguments for the MG speech; 2) OPP: oppositions strategies with outlined arguments, responses to the gov advantages/arguments, off-case positions, etc. YOUR CASE SHOULD BE 3 TO 5 PAGES LONG.  PLACE YOUR CASE INTO THE “Cases to be Indexed Folder” AND MAKE SURE YOUR NAME IS PART OF THE FILE NAME.
EXTEMP FILES AND FILING.
You will be assigned questions/areas to research. YOU SHOULD CHOOSE INDEPTH ARTICLES that are at least 2 or 3 pages long. Highlight key quotations in the articles. MOST IMPORTANTLY, YOUR ARTICLES SHOULD ALLOW YOU TO ANSWER A QUESTION LIKELY TO BE GIVEN. Save your files on the server and print and file the articles into the extemp tub by placing them into the proper section of the extemp file.
DUE THE WEEK BEFORE PLU, LEWIS AND CLARK, AND UPS TOURNAMENTS (3 total Parli cases and 3 total extemp filings).

·        PREP SESSIONS HAPPEN THURSDAYS JUST OVER A WEEK BEFORE TOURNAMENTS.
If your case and extemp stuff is done, you are expected to be at the Prep Session for 1 hour.
If your case or extemp stuff is not done, you are expected to be at the Prep Session for 4 hours.

·        6 HOURS PREPING EACH WEEK
--You are expected to work in the Prep Rooms for 6 hours each and every week until the last tournaments are completed.
--You will work on theory, case research, drills, practice debates, review ballots, etc. during this time.
--Take care of homework, test preparation, papers, etc. so that they do not interfere. 6 HOUR PREPING IS CLASS TIME AND IT IS REQUIRED.

·        You will NOT be excused from your tournament obligations for parties, dances, visits with parents, going to movies, concerts, friends, etc. Homework, papers, etc. are not excused; you are responsible for handling those before the tournament begins.

 

·        You must arrive for your tournament work on time and you may not leave early without permission.

 

·        You will be excused from your obligation to the tournament ONLY for emergencies, classes and scheduled work.

 

·        Excuses for any reasons including for classes, work, illnesses, deaths in the family, etc. are granted but you will still have team service for time missed beyond 4 hours.

 

·        Failure to work at the tournament or to leave early or arrive late without excuse will mean team service at 150% of the time you miss.


·        YOU HAVE FOUR HOURS OF TEAM SERVICE
You can help with the 121 class that meets Mon. and Wed. 4:15 to 6:15pm (look for emails about this) or after the Thanksgiving break with other projects.
Deadline for Team Service is Reading Day. If late, you’ll have four additional days to complete 150% of your remaining team service time. After that, you lose 1/3 grade for each hour not completed.


·        JUDGE AT THE INTRAMURAL DEBATE CONTEST, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 3, 4:20 TO 6PM.

--If you recruit someone to debate at the contest AND you judge, you will earn a $30 honorarium from the school.

--If you do not judge a round at the IM Debate Contest for a reason other than one Jim excuses (such as a class or you did not receive a ballot), you receive one hour of team service (two hours for two missed rounds).

 

·        COMPETE AT A MINIMUM OF TWO TOURNAMENTS IN PARLI AND IN EXTEMP OR IMPROMPTU DURING THE SEMESTER.
NOTE: It is your responsibility to assure that you can participate in enough tournaments to meet the requirement for this course.  In order to attend tournaments, you must prepare and practice.  DO NOT DELAY ATTENDING TOURNAMENTS.  If you do not compete in Parli at a minimum of two tournaments, you will need to see Jim to do makeup work or you will not receive an A in the course.

RHETORIC 222: INTERCOLLEGIATE POLICY DEBATE

Course Expectations

This course involves preparing, practicing, and competing in policy debate and assisting the forensics program including with tournaments that we host. Your grade is based on completing the following items.

 

·        ATTEND THE THURSDAY CLASS SESSION EACH TUES, 4:30 TO 5:45PM AND THURS, 7 TO 8:15PM

Be at the meeting and arrive on time.

 

·        CHECK YOUR E-MAIL EACH DAY
Check and respond to e-mail messages at least once a day.

·        PREPARE RESEARCH ASSIGNMENTS

You are expected to COMPLETE A 30+ PAGE RESEARCH ASSIGNMENT ON TUESDAY BEFORE EACH TOURNAMENT.  Typically, these assignments are one of the following: an affirmative case, affirmative case backup briefs, a negative case assignment, a disadvantage, topicality positions, etc.  You are expected to have regular meetings with the policy coaches to go over your debate assignments and turn in research assignments to other team members on time and meet the team standards for research assignments. Want to travel nationally? Then you MUST exceed these expectations.

·        9 HOURS PREPING EACH WEEK
--You are expected to work in the Prep Rooms for 9 hours each and every week until the last tournaments are completed.
--You will work on theory, case research, drills, practice debates, review ballots, etc. during this time.
--Take care of homework, test preparation, papers, etc. so that they do not interfere. 9 HOUR PREPING IS CLASS TIME AND IT IS REQUIRED.

·        PREP SESSIONS HAPPEN THE TUESDAY BEFORE EACH TOURNAMENT.
You spend at least 4 hours at these Prep Sessions in the Prep Rooms—researching, filing, etc.

·        ENGAGE IN DRILLS.
You are expected to ENGAGE IN TWO DRILLS ON WEDNESDAY OR THURSDAY PRIOR TO EACH TOURNAMENT YOU ATTEND.  You are expected to be prepared to start your practice sessions as soon as they start; hence have your flowsheets, briefs, tubs, etc., well ahead of the starting time.

·        GET AND SEND SOURCE CITATIONS
When you hear a good card—GET THE SOURCE CITATION! Send the source citation to whoever is researching it; if you don’t know who that is, send it to Aaron.

·        ASSIST IN THE MANAGEMENT OF THE TOURNAMENTS THAT WHITMAN HOSTS
You must do 2 things to assist with the Whitman hosted Tournament:
1. You will be given a job that requires you to work; you will receive information about when you will do your tournament job. Your job usually will be during the week of the tournament including inputting room information, setting up chairs, helping the tab room, etc.
2. You will also work during the tournament.

      HS Tournament Nov. 5 – 7 (at all times).
      5 hours time at the WNPT (or compete at it) Nov. 13-15.


You will NOT be excused from your tournament obligations for parties, dances, visits with parents, going to movies, concerts, friends, etc. You may not leave early without permission.
