Travel Criteria
·
121 students may participate at one Northwest
tournament only if they qualify and within the restrictions we have set for
numbers of competitors we can send to tournaments.
·
221 and 222 students are guaranteed to be able to
and are expected to attend 2 tournaments each semester. We limit the number of
teams that can attend any tournament except the Whitman tournament. If you wish
to attend a 3rd or additional tournaments during a semester, you
will be ranked by the coaching staff based on your work output and win-loss
record (and the staff reserves the right to break up teams to accomplish the
best teams for determining who may attend a 3rd or additional
tournaments).*
·
Students going to Northwest tournaments are expected
to complete assignments, practice events, do well in classes, attend general
meetings, be coachable, support the team, act appropriately at tournaments, and
assist with tournaments the team hosts.
·
Parli National Tournaments means that the coaching
staff have determined you are working hard, attend all expected tournaments in
the northwest, and that you have a good chance of breaking at the national
tournament in senior division. The tournament schedule notes the maximum number
of teams we are able to send at each tournament.*
·
Policy National Tournaments means that the coaching
staff have determined you are working hard, attend all expected tournaments in
the northwest, and that you have a good shot of going 5-3 or better at the
tournament in the appropriate division. The tournament schedule notes the
maximum number of teams we are able to send at each tournament.*
·
NPTE qualification is based on a ranking system
listed at: http://npte.debateaddict.com/
(top 48 teams in the ranking system with first round, second round, and
at-large bids)
·
NDT qualification is based on a qualifying system
listed at: http://www.wfu.edu/organizations/NDT/Documents/ndtrules.html
(top approx. 76 teams with first round, regional, and second round bids).
·
NIET qualification is based on receiving 3 legs with
placings totaling 8 or less in an event. You receive a leg in any senior
division event from a tournament with 10 or more schools competing in IEs for
the top six placers (less if there are less than 12 competitors in an event).
So, if you placed 3rd, 2nd, and 2nd in a
senior division event—you would have 3 legs with a placing total of 7.
You would then qualify. NOTE-BEGINNING FALL 2005, 21 competitors must be in an
event in order for it to qualify 6 legs.
·
*We reserve the right to change the limits on travel
based on various factors. As a whole, we will allow additional competitors to
participate at tournaments only if we can reduce expenses by staying at
people’s homes or if we raise unexpected additional money.
Questions should be directed to Jim Hanson at hansonjb@whitman.edu
