You choose the kind of speech you want to present. You can:
1. Teach 5. Be a lawyer in a case
2. Do a debate with other class members 6. Do a Persuasive or Informative speech
3. Praise or blame something in our society 7. Choose your own kind of speech--just be sure to talk
4. Do a comic standup routine to me ahead of time.
Each speech will have its own set of criteria. I will identify what I am looking for when I review your Outline/Powerpoint for the Final speech. Your goal is to make an effective 6 to 7 minute presentation.

What to do for each kind of Final Speech:
You teach for 6 to 7 minutes. Typically, you need to get people doing whatever it is that you are talking about. If you are instructing students how to do a type of math problem--then have them do it. Take notice--having students do things takes a lot of time and you only have 6 to 7 minutes--so do NOT prepare to do an in-depth lecture. You will probably outline a 4 step process of how to do something, students will then do the 4 step process, you will offer comments on what they did and answer their questions. If your teaching is going to be on something where "doing it" does not seem to work--then speak to me.
How I grade Teaching Final Speeches:
1. How clear were you in presenting your lecture? 4. How specific and helpful were your responses to student output?
2. How well did you answer student questions? 5. How interesting, relevant and helpful was the activity you asked us to do?
3. How interesting was your presentation?
Persuasive or Informative speech
I use the same standards as in previous speeches but with a little less focus on the structures/parts of the speech.
Comic Standup Routine--Speech to Entertain
Here, the goal is to entertain us with jokes for 6 to 7 minutes. We should laugh out loud many times. At the same time, the speech should make some kind of point--the jokes and stories you tell should focus on different angles on the same theme. Your conclusion should discuss the main theme/point that your speech developed. Basically, I grade these speeches on the basis of how funny they are and how well you develop an important theme.
Debate with other class members
Agree to a format and topic. You can have 2, 3 or 4 people. You’ll be expected to address the key issues involved and to respond to each others’ arguments.
Lawyer making a Case
Agree to a case. For the trial, you can be a prosecutor or a defense attorney or if two of you want to do this--one can be prosecutor and the other the defense. See me about this--we will work out what you will do. You can choose the subject for your debate or trial.
Praise or blame something in our society
I will be looking for a well worded speech that carefully highlights the issue, person or situation on which you want us to focus. See me for more details--these speeches widely vary in what they need to be effective.
Show us how to make your favorite food and, of course, give us some samples! I grade these speeches, more or less, like an informative speech.
Your own kind of speech
Talk with or email me about your idea to make sure it is a go. Basically, most any kind of speech that you prepare yourself is a speech you may give.
THE CRITIQUE SHEET FOR THE FINAL SPEECH
I and the peer critics will use a blank sheet of paper to evaluate your final speech. When I write comments on the speech, I will just list them out. When I grade your speech, I will give you a grade on the presentation as a whole (up to 40 points) with your rough draft counting as up to 5 points and your final draft counting as up to 5 points (for a total of 50 points).
