quarterlife magazine was founded by three Whittie writers in 2006. They were bothered by a monotony and exclusion that they felt was sometimes present in showcases of "higher literature." The founders wanted to press the writing community to explore ideas, both thematic and structural, that challenged the dominantly accepted status quo while maintaining a quality publication that other people would want to read. They created a magazine that sought, and still seeks, to explore issues that aren't given the light of day and aspires to be more actively involved in the inspiration and process of writing.

quarterlife began because of an interest that remains today in those places where the sun don't shine, in those forbidden areas on the human body and in forbidden areas in the mind and in our culture. We want those pieces and authors that often don't get the light of day to be given the spotlight that we feel they deserve.
