Emily Bushnell is Whitman’s Arnold Visiting Professor for 2007-2008. She joins the Psychology Department from Tufts University, where she is a Professor of Psychology and Director of the Behavioral Development Lab. Dr. Bushnell received her B.A. in Psychology from Swarthmore College in 1972 and her Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from the University of Minnesota’s Institute of Child Development in 1979. She has been a member of the Psychology Department at Tufts University since 1979, and has also been a Visiting Fellow at La Trobe University in Victoria, Australia, and a Visiting Research Fellow at St. Andrews University in St. Andrews, Scotland. Dr. Bushnell has published over 30 scientific articles and given over 75 professional presentations on her work in the area of perceptual-motor and cognitive development. Her early research focused on infants’ reaching and on their visual and haptic (by touch) perception; currently, she is interested in the evolution and development of tool-using and conducts research on imitation as a mechanism for learning to use objects during infancy. Dr. Bushnell has served on National Institutes of Health study sections to review research grants and on the editorial boards of the journals Developmental Psychology and Child Development. She recently served as Co-chair of the Program Committee for the 2007 meetings of the Society for Research in Child Development. While at Whitman, Dr. Bushnell will teach seminars on the Evolution of Cognition (Fall ’07) and Issues in Perception (Spring ’08), as well as a one-credit evening course each semester open to all Whitman students.
