Penrose Library-Whitman College

Reference and Information Literacy

As detailed in the Penrose Library Mission and Guiding Principles, the reference and instruction department guides the students through the research process, helping them develop the critical thinking skills to conduct research, synthesize information, and communicate the results of intellectual inquiry.

Services:

The department provides reference assistance and information literacy instruction.

Reference Assistance:

The reference department offers research assistance in a variety of contexts, including in person at the reference desk, via phone, and via email. You may also request an information literacy instruction session for your class or refer students to make an individual appointment. We can help you develop search strategies, find books, articles, websites and other resources.

Information Literacy Instruction:

Our librarians are eager to support the research needs of your courses, and to work with you to insure that students receive effective information literacy instruction. Our program of instruction is developed in collaboration with classroom faculty to build general information literacy skills and is designed to fit into the framework of your course.

Instruction provides students with:

Instruction includes presentation and hands-on active learning components, as well as class discussion. You may schedule an instruction session in the Center for Teaching and Learning, college classrooms or college computer labs. Please contact reference department personnel to schedule your session.
