Seven Things Everyone Should Know about the Penrose Library

2. Penrose Library Hours: When classes are in session the Library is open 24/7. Whitman ID is needed for Library access from 10 p.m. until 9 a.m. General Library information is available at the Circulation Desk.

3. Penrose Library Catalog: Search for material in the Penrose Library, renew items and check the status of Summit requests. Use the “Modify Search ” feature to limit your search by type (videos & journals), language, year, etc.

4 Databases & Indexes: Use the “Find an article” link to locate articles and research material. This links you to all our databases, electronic dictionaries, thesauri, and encyclopedias. For research assistance ask at the Reference Desk.

5. Circulation: Students can check out books for 3 weeks, with 1 renewal. Some items have a shorter loan period; other items may not be renewed.

6. Summit & Interlibrary Loan (ILL):

  • Summit : If you can't find an item in the Library Catalog use the “Search Summit” link. Summit is a library catalog that combines over 27 million items from Oregon and Washington academic libraries. Requested items arrive within 2 to 3 business days. Journal articles are not available through Summit .

  • Interlibrary Loan (ILL): If an item is not available in the Penrose Library or through Summit you may request it through ILL. Journal articles usually arrive within 5 business days; other items may arrive within four to six weeks.

7. Course Reserves: Most assigned readings are available as Ereserves or at the Circulation Desk.
