2008 Senior Thesis Exhibit

During the senior year, all art majors participate in a unique year-long seminar which, (in addition to research, production, and critiques), includes a faculty-led fieldtrip to New York City. Visiting the galleries and museums in the world capital of contemporary art, students are able to position their endeavors within a cultural and historic framework. Their year culminates in a thesis exhibition of an original body of work produced over their two final semesters. This work is then analyzed by a visiting juror (usually a known artist or art historian) who spends time with the work, as well as discussing intention with each art major in the show. The Perry Award is given to the top three majors in the show.

To see the winners and information on this year's juror, Marie Shurkus go to www.whitman.edu/sheehan/Sheenan_Season07-08.html

Art Thesis Majors Jason Brain, Mysha Oveson, Sarah Haas, Kento Ushikubo, Gayle Chung, Sylvia Imbrock, Emma Wood, Ryan Peinhardt, Gregory Hansen, Ashley Lau, and Sunyoung Yi pictured here, celebrated the opening of the Senior Art Thesis Exhibition on Friday, April 18 in the Sheehan Gallery.

David Stevens, former Whitman College Professor

Parents Fund Project

To honor Professor David Stevens
and his commitment to mentoring students,
Whitman College will name in his memory the
David Stevens Internship Endowment

Professor David Stevens was respected and beloved by generations of Whitman students. A stalwart supporter of students, he helped guide them in their life decisions and developed lifelong friendships with countless graduates. He highlighted the value of a liberal arts education in navigating work environments and inspired students to think innovatively about how their interests related to internships, graduate school, and careers.

The David Stevens Internship Endowment will fund in perpetuity a vital program which helps prepare students for life after Whitman.

Campus Safety and Security Measures

System Alert symbolIssues of safety and security on campus are certainly on the minds of parents around the globe. We have every reason to believe that Whitman's community is safe because of the systems and support provided by our security officers, faculty and staff. Still, the college remains vigilant in addressing issues of safety on campus and in ensuring that emergency measures are securely in place.

The college Emergency Preparedness Task Force, representing several campus departments and offices, has had an active role on the Whitman campus for a number of years. The responsibility of the team is to be mindful of, and prepared for, potential emergencies without being unduly restrictive of the free learning environment that is vital to our community.

A campus-wide notification system is already active. The system will immediately alert students, staff, and faculty – on campus and off – of any emergency that might arise through telephone, e-mail, and cell-phone messaging.

Other proactive resources and initiatives include:
  • Emergency response plan and management team that regularly simulates emergency situations and practices responses.
  • Routine collaboration with the Walla Walla Police Department, Walla Walla County Sheriff and Walla Walla Fire Department.
  • Faculty, resident assistants and student assistants who act as liaisons between our health/counseling centers and students in need of help.
  • 24-hour security staff.
  • 24-hour health center.
  • Counseling staff led by a licensed clinical psychologist and four professional counselors.
  • Collaboration with the Blue Mountain Chapter of the American Red Cross.
Please be assured that we will continue to monitor all of these measures and be mindful, as ever, of the daily health, well-being, and safety of the entire Whitman College community.

Storage at Whitman
Storage is available for clothes and books.
For furniture there are three options:
     Rent storage in town
Store with friends who live in off-campus housing
     Take home
Residence Life also suggests that students talk with their R.D. for additional ideas. Whitman has so little storage that, unfortunately, furniture cannot be accommodated.
