SIT: Serbia Peace and Conflict Studies in the Balkans

Through SIT Serbia, Bosnia, and Kosova: Peace and Conflict Studies in the Balkans program, Whitman students can gain firsthand knowledge of peace-building, conflict transformation, and the struggle for human rights in Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Kosovo.  The program is based in Serbia, but students take educational excursions to Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo.

Fields of study:

Serbian Language and Interdisciplinary Studies related to peace and conflict studies and the history of the region.

Eligibility:

Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 (Whitman requirement); ability to live in a culture very different from one’s own and to adjust to the living conditions of the developing world.

Credits:

16 credits per semester - Required Courses:
Peace and Conflict Studies in the Balkans Seminar (6 credits)
Intensive Serbian Language (4 credits)
Research Methods and Ethics(2 credits)
Independent Study Project (ISP) (4 credits)

Credit Conversion:

1 SIT credit = 1 Whitman credit

Housing:

Seven-week homestay in Belgrade.  Students doing an ISP in Belgrade may extend their homestay for four weeks.  A homestay can be arranged in other ISP locations as well.  Other accommodations during the program include guesthouses or small hotels.

Meals:

All meals for the entire program period are covered either by SIT directly, or through a stipend provided to each student, or through the homestay.

Internships:

During the Independent Study Project (ISP) period students may have the opportunity to pursue internships that allow them to take a more active role in the issues they are researching.  Sample internship sites include: the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network in Belgrade, the Dah Theatre in Belgrade, the Youth Initiative for Human Rights in Sarajevo, and the Center for Peace-building in Sanski Most.
