IES: Freiburg Environmental Studies & Sustainability

The IES: Freiburg Environmental Studies & Sustainability program through IES Abroad allows Whitman students to explore topics in Environmental Studies, Forest Ecology, and Sustainability while living in Freiburg, a well-known center for environmental innovation.

Environmental studies and sustainability

Eligibility:

Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0

Semesters Offered:

Fall, Spring

Calendar:

Late August-December, late February-June (spring program ends in July for students enrolled in optional post-program module or in post-program research assistantship)

Credits:

16-19 credits per semester - (courses are taught in modules)
Required Courses
German Language (3-4 credits)
IES Abroad Environmental Studies course (3 credits)
3 Environmental Studies courses at Albert-Ludwigs-Universitat  (3 credits each)

Credit Conversion:

1 IES credit = 1 Whitman credit

Housing:

In residence halls with German and international students

Meals:

Students prepare their own meals or purchase them at one of the many student cafeterias in the city.

Internships:

Spring semester students may apply for a Research Assistantship with faculty members from the University of Freiburg.  Research assistantships take place after the conclusion of spring semester and last six weeks.
