IES: Rome Language and Area Studies

Whitman students may enroll at the IES Center in Rome to study everything from art history to economics. As one of Europe's most important cultural and religious centers, Rome offers students the opportunity to learn amidst Roman ruins, baroque cathedrals, a lively contemporary visual and performing arts scene, and the Vatican. In addition, the program offers internships with local organizations and optional field trips each semester to locations such as Pompeii, Sicily, Tuscany and Umbria.

Fields of study:	Art history, film studies, classics, history, economics, Italian language and literature, politics, religion, and sociology.
Eligibility:	Minimum cumulative GPA requirement 2.8 (Whitman requirement)
Language Prerequisite:	None
Credits:	15-19 credits per semester - Required Courses: IES Abroad Italian language course (4 or 8 credits) IES Abroad area studies courses (3 credits each) Courses at a local university (optional, 3 credits each) Internship, Archaeology, or Social Action placement and accompanying seminar (3 credits each, optional)
Credit Conversion:	1 IES credit = 1 Whitman credit
Internships:	IES Rome offers three types of internships (traditional, social action, and archaeology).
Housing:	Students share apartments with other IES Abroad students and with Italian Student Companion (ISC), Homestays with Italian families.
Meals:	Students in apartments are responsible for preparing their own meals in their apartment or purchasing them at local eateries; participants in the homestays take breakfast daily with their families and have the option of sharing some evening meals with the family.
