IES: Rome Language and Area Studies

Whitman students may enroll at the IES Center in Rome to study everything from art history to economics. As one of Europe's most important cultural and religious centers, Rome offers students the opportunity to learn amidst Roman ruins, baroque cathedrals, a lively contemporary visual and performing arts scene, and the Vatican. In addition, the program offers internships with local organizations and optional field trips each semester to locations such as Pompeii, Sicily, Tuscany and Umbria.

“Rome is such an incredible city. I absolutely loved the history throughout the city and it has a certain charm that I have not experienced anywhere else in Europe. The people are very friendly and open--they are very proud of their culture and love to teach you about it, given the opportunity. This goes without saying, but the food is also amazing, and relatively affordable. The classes were overall very interesting, and I feel like I learned so much about the city and its history.” - Riley T. ‘16
