IES Milan - Music Tradition & Innovation

Through IES, student musicians have the opportunity to work with world-class musicians, soak up the local music scene, perform at a variety of venues, and attend a wide variety of performances.  This program tailors education to the specific needs and interests of each student.  There is a full range of opportunities for instrumentalists, vocalists, composers, and performance majors.

Fields of study:

Music (Vocal Performance, Instrumental Performance, Music Theory and Composition, and Music History), Italian language

Eligibility:

Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0; strong interest in music

Language Prerequisite:

None

Fall, Spring

Calendar:

September – December, January – May

Credits:

Required Courses (15-19 credits)

  • Italian Language (6 credits)
  • Four 3-credit courses in music, private instruction in music, internship,
    IES Italy Today electives, and/or university courses.

Credit Conversion:

1 IES credit = 1 Whitman credit

Housing:

Apartments with other American students and sometimes with Italian roommates
Homestays with Italian families

Meals:

Apartment: Students typically cook breakfast and dinner for themselves and eat lunch at university cafeterias or nearby restaurants.
Homestay: Breakfast and dinner are provided by the host family.  Students eat lunch at university cafeterias or nearby restaurants.

Internships:

Internships are available in non profits related to music
