CIEE: Taipei Communications, Business, and Political Economy

Based at National Chengchi University in Taipei, the CIEE: Taipei Communications, Business and Political Economy program offers students the rare opportunity to enroll in regular university courses (taught in English) alongside Taiwanese students. Students may select from a wide range of disciplines including international relations, economics, media studies and computer science. In addition, participants study Mandarin Chinese language.

Fields of study:

Chinese language, China-Taiwan relations, politics, economics, law, computer science, media studies, psychology, religion, minority studies, sociology, and art history.

Eligibility:

Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 (Whitman requirement) and one college-level Asian Studies course recommended.

Language Prerequisite:

Mandarin Chinese Language recommended but not required

Credits:

15 semester credits - Required Courses:
Chinese Language Course (6 credits)
Three elective English taught courses at National Chengchi University (3 credits each)
One elective may be the CIEE internship course (3 credits) or
Directed Independent Research (3 credits)

Credit Conversion:

1 CIEE credit = 1 Whitman credit

Internships:

In Taiwanese companies or nongovernmental organizations

Housing:

University residence hall with Taiwanese roommates, or a local homestay family

Meals:

Students in the residence halls and in host families are responsible for purchasing their own meals and typically eat either at the university cafeterias or at the numerous local restaurants near the campus.

September - January* or February - June
*Depending on the exact dates the fall semester may conflict with Whitman's spring semester certain years.
