Budapest Semesters in Mathematics (BSM)

Through the Budapest Semesters in Mathematics program, students learn mathematics from leading Hungarian scholars in English.  Hungary has a long tradition of excellence in mathematics education.  The instructors of Budapest Semesters in Mathematics are members of the three institutions in Budapest known for having educated more than half of Hungary's highly acclaimed mathematicians. The school is near the center of historic Budapest, classes are small, living costs are modest, and all courses are taught in English.

Eligibility:

Students must have completed one semester of Advanced Calculus (a first course in the Theory of Analysis) or Abstract Algebra by start of program.  Must be motivated to study mathematics.  Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 (Whitman requirement).

Required Courses:
Hungarian Language - Whitman students are encouraged to take the optional pre-semester Hungarian Language course, but are required to take Hungarian Language during the regular semester.

A normal course load is four BSM courses (including Hungarian language)

Credit Conversion:

1 BSM Unit = 4 Whitman credits

Housing:

Homestay with a Hungarian family or furnished apartment with other Budapest Semester participants

Deadline:

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until two-thirds of the class is filled; thereafter, all applications are held until the deadline – April 1 for Fall and October 15 for Spring. Whitman students must apply on or before the Whitman deadline. Early applications are encouraged.
