Premiere nature writer Barry Lopez comes to Whitman

Author Barry Lopez is coming to campus on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. in Maxey Auditorium to give a reading as part of the 2013-2014 Visiting Writers Series.

The San Francisco Chronicle called Lopez one of the most prominent nature writers in the country. He has won several awards, including the National Book Award for Nonfiction and the Oregon Book Award for his 1986 work, Artic Dreams.

Additionally, Lopez has done work as a landscape photographer and traveled to nearly 70 different countries. In 2003, he was elected a fellow of The Explorers Club.

His reading is open to the public.

Online report form replaces pink sexual misconduct forms

An online community care report form has replaced the pink sexual misconduct report forms that used to be located inside residence halls, Reid bathrooms and various campus offices.

Community care forms can be used not only to report cases of sexual misconduct, but also to report concerns about the mental and emotional well being of someone, cases of policy violation and hate crimes.

The form can be found here. Please contact Juli Dunn at dunnjl@whitman.edu or Barbara Maxwell at maxwelba@whitman.edu if you have questions.

Help create the campus directory

The college is currently creating this year’s printed campus directory, which will include offices, departments and the full alphabetical listings of staff and faculty. The information used in the directory is pulled from Datatel and needs to be verified. It is the same information that is used online in “People Search.”

The human relations department asks that you help by doing the following:

  • Go to People Search
  • Type in your last name. Sign in to view your complete listing. Please note: you will also see a View Earnings Statement link. You can only see your earnings statement; not earnings statements of your coworkers.
  • By Sept. 11, reply to luckstd@whitman.edu with changes and/or corrections. If you have already sent a correction and the information has not been changed online, please do not resend because the human relations department is still in the process of making corrections.

In late September, the full campus directory will be available online for final proofing before it goes to press. Your participation in helping us gather the most accurate and complete data possible will continue to make the campus directory a useful tool for the Whitman community.

Thank you for your assistance. Please direct your questions to luckstd@whitman.edu.

Seeking participants for Instant Play Festival

Harper Joy Theater is gearing up for the sixth annual Instant Play Festival, and faculty and staff volunteers are welcome to participate.

The festival is a unique event in which students attend workshops with professional playwrights for three weeks and then write, produce and perform 14 plays in just 48 hours. This year’s festival will take place on Saturday, Sept. 28 and Sunday, Sept. 29.

Volunteer actors and directors should email Kristen Kosmas at kosmask@whitman.edu, assistant professor of theater, for more details. No previous experience is necessary, and the time commitment is minimal since each ten-minute play will be rehearsed and performed on the same day.
