Faculty News Brief

Science News cover

Paul Yancey, Carl E. Peterson Endowed Chair of Sciences, was quoted recently in a Science News magazine cover story. Titled “Defying Depth,” the article explores how deep-sea creatures manage to survive conditions of extreme water pressure. Yancey explains how animals such as sea cucumbers and arthropods produce protein-stabilizing molecules such as trimethylamine oxide, which may account for how they tolerate deep-sea pressures. Correction

Last week’s Fountain incorrectly reported Pat Sorenson’s title as Division III assistant. She is the Division II assistant, Arts & Humanities. We apologize for this error and congratulate Sorenson again on receiving the Janice Abraham Award.

“How I spent my summer vacation” – share your story!

Again this summer The Fountain offers staff and faculty the opportunity to share summer vacation and travel stories. Is this summer your turn for an exciting adventure? Or maybe a terrific learning opportunity, whether to a scholarly or professional conference or an exotic locale? Maybe you’ll participate in a service-oriented trip, lead a tour or just spend a relaxing vacation on a beach somewhere. And on your travels, maybe you’ll run into fellow Whitman folks or meet someone who knows about the college. Feel free to share your “summer vacation” stories; photos are encouraged! Email your story and photos to thefountain@whitman.edu.
