Reason for optimism: another record year for applications

As of March 18, the total of completed applications to Whitman reached another record – 3,368. That’s a 2 percent increase over last year’s total of 3,288 for fall 2008. Tony Cabasco ’90, dean of admission and financial aid, reports that the admission staff expects to complete another 40-60 transfer student applications in the next week or so.

“In enrolling a class of new students this year, getting applications may only be half the battle due to the recession. However, application numbers holding steady, let alone seeing an increase is a real victory in these tough times,” Cabasco said. “Our application results affirm that the key messages we share about Whitman’s rigor, dedicated faculty, and commitment to a liberal arts education resonate with prospective students and families.”

According to Cabasco, the 10 admission officers spent much of the last three months reading the applications closely, and they devoted two full weeks, seven hours a day, in committee deliberations finalizing decisions. The Admission office expects to admit about 1,480 students (43-44 percent of all applicants) with a goal of enrolling 415 first-years and transfer students in the fall.

“We are amazed every year by the students we get to meet and know during the college search and application process,” Cabasco said. “We are fortunate to have so many talented students with diverse interests and backgrounds who are interested in attending Whitman. That’s very rewarding for the staff, but they also deserve kudos for their dedication and hard work.”

Faculty accomplishments

“Macbeth for Murderers,” written by Roberta Davidson, professor of English, and John Kerwin, adjunct instructor of sport studies, and published in 2005, was featured on MSNBC.com Wednesday, March 18. The book, based on the real experiences of Davidson and Kerwin while teaching at the Washington State Penitentiary, will be featured in the 2009 BookExpo America (New Title Showcase) at New York City on May 28-31.

Tom Edwards, the William Kirkman professor of history, emeritus, wrote an essay titled “Student Activism at Whitman College and Willamette University, 1965-1971,” that was published in last fall’s edition of the Pacific Northwest Quarterly. “The photos are really interesting and the writing is vintage Tom,” says John Bogley ’85, vice president for development and college relations and a former student of Professor Edwards. Gilbert Mireles, assistant professor of sociology, was featured on the Latinos and the Washington Economy segment broadcast on KUOW NPR, Seattle, on March 11. Mireles’ research focuses on the socio-political integration of immigrant communities into U.S. society. He is also a commissioner on the Washington State Commission on Hispanic Affairs. Recital: Tyler Abbott, bass, and Kraig Scott, piano, will present a recital at the Melvin K. West Fine Arts Center, Walla Walla University, College Place, at 7:30 p.m. (Amy Dodds, adjunct assistant professor of music, was involved in planning the event and sends a special invitation to the Whitman community.) Thursday, April 2
Lecture: “The 3 Things Americans Don’t Understand About the War in Iraq Right Now” will be presented at 7 p.m. in Cordiner Hall, by Thomas Ricks, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and #1 New York Times bestselling author of “Fiasco: The American Military Adventure in Iraq,” which was published to critical acclaim in 2006. Lecture: “Choices, Consequences and Cooperative Conservation – A New Environmentalism?” will be presented by Classical Liberalism Visiting Speaker Lynn Scarlett at 7 p.m. in Maxey Auditorium.
