January 29, 2013

Walla Walla, WA – Whitman swimmer Galen Sollom-Brotherton has been named the Northwest Conference Male Student-Athlete of the Week for his sterling performance in Whitman’s historic victory last Saturday against Whitworth.

Sollom-Brotherton took first in three individual races and swam a leg on the Missionaries winning relay team that provided the decisive margin over the Pirates, who had not lost a dual meet in fourteen seasons.

The junior from Dublin, CA touched the wall first in the 1,650 Freestyle (16:22.08), the 500 Free (4:45.30), and the 400 Individual Medley (4:13.05). His time in the IM is the fastest in the NWC this season, his 1,650 is a season best and the second fastest in conference to-date, and his 500 time ranks third.

The 400 relay first place time of 3:08.48 is also the quickest in the conference, so far. Sollom-Brotherton has been a stalwart performer for the Missioanaries all season long and becomes the second male Whitman swimmer to earn the Student-Athlete of the Week honor, joining Karl Mering (So, Boise, ID).

Upon learning of Sollom-Brotherton’s honor, Whitman Head Swim Coach Jenn Blomme said, “We are really excited for Galen!  He is so deserving of this award.  In fact, each week our captains select a ‘swimmer of the week’ from our team. This week, the team nominated Galen as well, and made a joke about him swimming 2,650 yards in the meet, the most you could possibly do in one day!”

Sollom-Brotherton is the fifth Missionary to win the Student-Athlete award during the Winter Sports season.
