Men's Tennis: Whitman Preps for Pirate Invasion on Saturday

March 29, 2012

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College men's tennis team resumes Northwest Conference play this Saturday when it hosts Whitworth at 2 p.m.

Weather permitting, the match will be played on the outdoor courts, but the weather forecast indicates a good probability that moving indoors to the Bratton Tennis Center will be necessary.

Adriel Borshansky

Whitman, in pursuit of a fifth straight conference title, is 8-0 in the NWC and 15-3 overall. Whitworth is in third place in the conference standings with a 5-2 record (8-5).

Whitman is No. 8 in the NCAA Division III national rankings and No. 1 in the West Region.

Adriel Borshansky, who is in the midst of a superlative senior season, has been nearly perfect in singles this spring.

After dropping a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 decision at No. 3 singles in early February against Lewis-Clark State, Borshansky has won 14 straight matches.

Most of his wins have come at No. 6 singles, although he has victories at all spots in the singles ladder except No. 1.

While Borshansky has seen most of his court time in singles, junior Matt Tesmond has played mostly at doubles, going 10-6 while playing the bulk of those matches at the No. 1 spot with senior Conor Holton-Burke.

Holton-Burke, the reigning NWC Player of the Year, is 11-5 in singles while bouncing around the top three spots.

Freshman James Rivers had made a strong college debut this spring, compiling a 12-3 mark in singles (mostly at No. 4) and 11-4 record in doubles.

Sophomore Andrew La Cava has played all of matches at the highly competitive No. 1 singles spot, going 9-4. His record in doubles is 15-3.

Junior Jeff Tolman is 11-3 in doubles, playing with La Cava, and 7-3 at No. 2 singles.

Sam Sadeghi, also a junior, is 9-3 in singles while playing in four different spots. He is 9-4 in doubles.

After playing Saturday, Whitman will have three NWC matches left on its regular season schedule. The last of those three is a home match against Lewis & Clark on Saturday, April 14.
