WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Whitman College will open its doors to approximately 1,360 new and returning students when the first classes of Spring Semester 2003 begin here at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21. Campus residence halls will open at 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 17, in time for students to catch the first activities of the semester.

On Friday the women's and men's basketball teams play Willamette University at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., respectively, in Sherwood Center. Then at 9 p.m. in the Reid Campus Center, Travis Nelson will present the semester's first Coffeehouse.

Pre-registration for "winteryum" activities will take place Tuesday, Jan. 21, through Thursday, Jan. 23, in Reid Campus Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. Students, faculty and staff can sign up at the Reid information desk if this time is inconvenient. The last chance to sign up will be at the Reid Campus Center birthday celebration and Winteryum kick-off from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23. Winteryum activities and events are available on a first-come-first-served basis and there is a registration fee of $3 for the first activity and $1 for each additional activity. (Some activities may require an additional fee for supplies.)

"Winteryum," the 2003 version of the college's customary interim period, is an opportunity for Whitman students, staff and faculty to explore a variety of non-traditional academic and extracurricular pursuits outside the usual classroom setting. The 2003 interim will begin Thursday, Jan. 23, and continue through the weekend.

Nearly two dozen "winteryum" activities are available, including tours of local art galleries and the Walla Walla Foundry, as well as "Broomball," "Fundamentals of Private Flying," "Intermediate Knitting," "The Art of Chinese Cooking," "Paint Some Pottery," "Ice Climbing at Bluewood," "Magic!" and "Ski for Free at Bluewood."
