WALLA WALLA, Wash.-- Contentious philosophical and political arguments surrounding current debates about the future of wilderness areas in the American West will be discussed Monday, Sept. 25, on the Whitman College campus.

R. McGreggor Cawley, professor of political science at the University of Wyoming, will present the annual William O. Douglas Lecture at 8 p.m. in Olin Auditorium. Cawley, who is well known for his writings on the Sagebrush Rebellion and environmental politics in the American West, will present "The Voice of the Inanimate Object: Thoughts on the Politics of Wilderness." His lecture is free and open to the public.

Cawley is the author of "Federal Land, Western Anger." He is also co-editor, with Whitman professor of politics Philip Brick, of "A Wolf in the Garden: The Land Rights Movement and the New Environmental Debate," a collection of essays about the wise use land movement.

The late William O. Douglas, a 1920 graduate of Whitman College and a Supreme Court Justice for 36 years, was known in his years on the court for his concern for the environment.
