Assistant Professor of Chemistry Mark Juhasz, Associate Professor of Physics Doug Juers and alumnus Aaron Rosenbaum '12 recently published an article titled "Copper-Promoted Cyanation of a Boron Cluster: Synthesis, X-ray Structure, and Reactivity of 12-CN-closo-CHB11H10-" in an academic journal.
The research team investigated new chemical reactions for use with carboranes, molecules based on clusters of carbon and boron. Carboranes are valuable for a variety of uses, including pharmaceuticals, materials for optics and electronics and catalysts for industrial-scale chemical reactions, but the limited synthetic repertoire of these molecules has been a roadblock to their wider adoption for practical applications. The article describes the development of a new synthetic method for carboranes and the first synthesis of three new carborane-based molecules.
