Dr. Haroon K. Ullah

Dr. Haroon K. Ullah '99 is a member of Secretary of State John Kerry's Policy Planning Staff. After majoring in politics at Whitman, he went on to receive an MPA from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government and a PhD from the University of Michigan's joint program in Public Policy and Political Science. He has spent more than six years in Pakistan, doing fieldwork, working as part of Ambassador Richard Holbrook's Afghanistan/Pakistan team and, most recently, as Director for Public Diplomacy in the Community Engagement Office of the U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan. He is the author of Vying for Allah's Vote: Understanding Islamic Parties, Political Violence, and Extremism in Pakistan (Georgetown University Press, 2014) and The Bargain from the Bazaar: A Family's Day of Reckoning in Lahore (Public Affairs, 2014).
