Associate Professor of History Elyse Semerdjian recently organized a community fundraiser to support humanitarian relief in Syria. Attendees gathered in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church to eat authentic Syrian cuisine prepared by a local caterer and to listen to live music from local bands and musicians. All proceeds from the event were matched 4 to 1 by UNICEF for a grand total of $28,613 going toward feeding starving war victims.
Several Whitman staff and faculty members were involved in the preparation for this event. Semerdjian would like to thank Paul Garret Professor of Political Science Shampa Biswas, Professor of Anthropology Chas McKhann, Associate Professor of Anthropology Jason Pribilsky, Assistant Professor of Anthropology Suzanne Morrissey for helping out in the kitchen and Instructional Technologist Bryan Lubbers and Administrative Assistant for Development Becci Moore for helping with the silent auction.
