Yunnan Province hails professor for service in
China
In connection with the Peoples Republic of
China National Day celebration October 1, associate professor of
anthropology Charles Chas McKhann traveled to Kunming
to receive the Cai Yun award from the governor of Yunnan Province.
About 10 awards are given each year
to foreign experts who have distinguished themselves through their
dedicated service to the people of Yunnan Province.
A 1979 Whitman graduate, McKhann first went to China
in 1982 to teach English at Yunnan University under the Whitman
in China exchange program. For the last two decades he has been
involved in ethnographic research among the Tibeto-Burman people
of northwestern Yunnan. In addition, he has worked to develop academic
exchanges between Whitman College, Yunnan University, the Yunnan
Academy of Social Sciences, and other institutions of higher learning
in China.
