Baja California: Education, Adventure

March 17-24, 2001

Spanish missions, desert mountains, offshore islands, and a traditional way of life in a remote part of Mexico — professor of Spanish Clark Colahan offers to introduce alumni, parents, and friends to one of his favorite places.

Colahan, who has taught at Whitman since 1983, has led several trips to Baja California. His wide interests and experience include desert hiking, music, and snorkeling, and he is a certified interpreter.

"It's like a trip back in time to the California of 150 years ago," Colahan says. Sights include the old capital city of Loreto, a restored mission, stark desert terrain, and mountain ranches. The group will climb a volcano, watch sea lions and grey whales, and meet people whose families have lived in the area for generations. "We will return each evening to a modern hotel on the beach," Colahan says. "Bring your guitar. There will be lessons on the traditional romantic songs of Mexico, culminating in a serenade."
