Faculty Awards

Bob Carson

"He has averaged well over 50 advisees at any given time," said Dean Keef, as President Cronin presented the George Ball Award for Excellence in Advising to professor Bob Carson at Commencement. Carson, the Grace Farnsworth Phillips Professor of Geology and Environmental Studies, has been a Whitman faculty member since 1975. "He must have hundreds of former advisees," a student wrote, "and he seems to remember each and every one of their names and interests. It is no wonder that so many of (them) come back to visit Whitman."

Bob Withycombe

Professor Bob Withycombe, a member of the Whitman faculty since 1980, received the Thomas D. Howells Award for Distinguished Teaching in Humanities. "During his first dozen years at Whitman, in addition to being an award-winning teacher of rhetoric and public address, he coached our successful forensics and debate program," Dean Keef said. Withycombe also has contributed to the first-year core program and served as a faculty leader.

Susan Pickett

Susan Pickett has been recognized nationally for her contribution in rediscovering the music of under-appreciated women composers. A member of the faculty since 1981, she received the G. Thomas Edwards Faculty Award for Distinguished Scholarship and Teaching Excellence. "I have encountered no professor who better exemplifies this ideal than does Dr. Pickett," wrote one of her students. Pickett holds the Catharine Chism Endowed Chair of Music.

Jim Russo

Jim Russo, associate professor of chemistry who came to Whitman in 1989, received the Lange Award for Distinguished Teaching in Science. One of his students wrote, "Professor Russo demonstrates excellence in teaching through highly organized lectures, clear statements of student responsibility, assignments of meaningful course work, integration of current research with the basic curricula, and well-designed teaching methods."

Phil Brick

"Phil Brick is the kind of teacher every school wants, every parent wants, and every student deserves," wrote a Whitman student who nominated the politics professor for the Robert Y. Fluno Award for Distinguished Teaching in Social Sciences. Brick joined the Whitman faculty in 1990.
