Director of international programs honored

Susan Brick
Susan Holme Brick, director of international programs at Whitman College, has received a national award from the Institute for the International Education of Students (formerly the Institute of European Studies).

Brick was presented the 1999 Professional Development Award in October at the institute's annual meeting in Chicago. She received a cash award that will enable her to visit one of the program's 14 centers world wide. Brick said she will probably visit the center in Milan.

This is the first year IES has given the professional development award. Mary Dwyer, IES president, cited Brick for her energy and enthusiasm, creativity in promoting and supporting study abroad, and commitment to student service.

Brick studied in Vienna under the IES program in 1980. A 1981 graduate of Colgate University, she attended the Mandarin Training Center at National Taiwan Normal University, Taipei, for intensive Chinese language training, taught English as a foreign language at the YMCA Language School in Taipei, and earned her master's in Asian studies from the University of California at Berkeley in 1985. She has directed Whitman's international programs since 1994.
