ROY

Big City Sin and Small Town Redemption

at formula: a change of pace for these day-jobbing hardcore band members proves refreshing, with pop-punk hooks energizing the familiar territory of Wilco and Uncle Tupelo. This is distinctly a Northwest album as well: Modest Mouse influence is inescapable (esp. on #4). Roy's amalgamation of a less smart-ass Pavement style with an avid ear for pop pays off in a result only the Weakerthans have yet come close to matching. Try #2, 4, 5 (FCC on 2 and 5). "one of the first essential albums of 2004" -AMG
