Her Majesty The Decemberists
kill rock stars
Riding on the novelty of their antebellum-crafted sound, the Decemberists diversify their weighty indie-pop with shanties, odes to LA and NYC, and a darker tone lyrically. Meloy & Co.’s second full-length seems a little rushed, especially considering yesteryear’s rogue masterpiece Castaways and Cutouts. Gone are the patient melodies and extremely time-entrenched lyrics; references to the days of yore come as an afterthought to the detail of diverse instrumentation, from accordion to xylophone. Try 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 10.
