Radio Station Will Request Financial Aid Show

The following is reprinted from the Whitman College Pioneer, date unknown.

On Monday, February 23, the ASWC Student Congress will consider funding for the proposed campus radio station. This will culminate over six months of serious planning on the part of members of the newly instituted Whitman College Radio Station Committee.

Although all AM frequencies have been closed to new stations, their proposed radio station can take advantage of lenient FCC regulations regarding ten watt FM educational stations. These regulations require no detailed topographical measurements, and disc-jockeys do not have to be licensed.

The price of essential broadcasting equipment, plus the operational budget for one year will bring the initial cost to $7500. Most of the money will go to the purchase of the transmitter, the stereo generator and the audio board. In order to reduce cost, only the most necessary equipment and supplies have been considered.

Members of the committee emphasize the value of a student oriented radio station as an outlet for creative energies, and as factor in improved campus communication. Excellent stereo music and student debate are stressed as two promising programming aspects of the broadcast schedule. A proposal has even been made to offer the Lone Ranger to students during that bleak half hour before dinner.
