“Movement that Matters” program summer session starts June 3

The Fountain

Launched in January 2012, the “Movement That Matters” employee wellness exercise program will start another session on Monday, June 3. The 11-week session will continue through Thursday, Aug. 22. There will be a break during the first week of July to accommodate vacation schedules and the holiday.

The summer session offers five classes per week over the noon hour or at 5:15 p.m., including two sections of yoga, two core conditioning classes, and spinning with new instructor Rebecca Thorpe. A new class also will be offered for the four Wednesdays of June, called “Super Circuit,” which will be held in the weight room at BFFC. The Outdoor Program staff has graciously offered to keep the Climbing Wall open on Fridays at noon through Aug. 2 even though student staffers aren’t available over the summer.

“We logged over 2,100 hours on the sign-in sheets in the spring session,” says Michele Hanford, fitness facilities director, who designed the program in conjunction with Deb Wright, student accounts manager. “Kudos to Ian Quorn, who had 139 hours, and Laura Nix, the only other person in triple digits, with 101 hours. On our last survey we even had one participant mention they have lost 20 pounds! And we consistently hear that the classes help build a strong Whitman community, bringing staff and faculty together who might not otherwise meet.”

Participants pay a $45 enrollment fee, and the college pays more than half of the costs of instructors' fees to help encourage employee health and wellness. A registration form and detailed calendar is available on the program’s website. Contact Wright at Hanford at with questions about the program.
