Whitman receives $235,000 from Sherwood Trust to support local internships

The Donald and Virginia Sherwood Trust has awarded Whitman a grant of $235,000 to create the Sherwood Trust Internship Endowment, which will support student internships in the Walla Walla region. The grant both recognizes Whitman’s interest in expanding connections with the Walla Walla community and honors the Sherwood Trust’s interest in serving the people of the Walla Walla Valley.

Sherwood internships are designated for local non-profit organizations, governmental agencies, or schools, according to John Bogley, vice president for development and college relations.

“The establishment of the Sherwood Internship Endowment will allow Whitman to increase the quantity, quality, and range of paid internships that provide experience-based opportunities available to our students,” Bogley says. “It will have a positive and permanent impact for the local community as well as Whitman students.”

Annual giving office thanks faculty and staff for contributions

Brian Dohe, Helen Tanaka, Brenda Michels, and Becci Moore from the Office of Annual Giving thank the 114 faculty and staff members to date who have made gifts to the college during the fiscal year ending June 30. These gifts total more than $56,000 and support a wide range of campaign initiatives and scholarships. Anyone still interested in making a gift to the college can still do so online at www.whitman.edu/give or by sending a check via campus mail to the Office of Annual Giving, Memorial 123. Gifts may be designated to scholarships, varsity athletics or academic departments; an unrestricted gift will support the area of greatest need. Enhanced “myWhitman” portal tool offers single site access to key resources

Here is a Q&A about myWhitman with Michael Quiner, director of enterprise technology:

Q – What is myWhitman?
A – myWhitman is a campus website that brings together information from diverse sources such as CLEo or People Search in a unified way.

Q –What advantages does it offer?
A – One key advantage is a single login. It also provides a clean, consistent look and feel for multiple applications and databases, such as CLEo or Quack, which up to now have been in different locations and require multiple logins. Each information source, such as Webadvisor or People Search, gets its dedicated area on the page for displaying information. It features a re-imagined search tool, that allows you to search for more than just people. Also it provides context-sensitive actions for people and courses, meaning you can do different things with a person, such as add them to a course waitlist, than you can do with a course. And it gives us Excel and PDF export ability and improved search performance.

Q – What will it help me do?
A – myWhitman will present tools and links based on an individual’s role(s) at the college to facilitate that person’s access to necessary resources. For instance, a faculty member will be able to search for and work with their student advisees; course information, such as rosters and waitlists; and their CLEo sites for their current and upcoming courses. Staff will have access to budgets, vacation balances and pay summaries as well as their CLEo sites and commonly used web links, all from a central location.

Q – How/where/when do I access it?
A – It will be available Tuesday, June 19; a campus email on Tuesday will include the link. Also there will be prominent links from the current Staff, Faculty and Students pages, which we know are out of date and inconsistent with the style of the web but are so heavily used that they will stay for the time being.

Q – Can the new myWhitman replace anything I may be using now?
A – myWhitman is intended to bring all the links and access that you currently have to access through the dedicated Staff or Faculty and Student pages mentioned above into a cohesive, easy to use entry point. It will consolidate the Quack, CLEo, People Search, or Webadvisor access that currently requires accessing several different web pages.

Q – Is there a link that provides info or training on using the portal?
A – myWhitman is intuitive and very easy to use. Information about changes, such as any movement in location of links or tools will be included on the myWhitman page. And you can always contact the Help Desk if you get stuck.

Five-star rating for Whitman’s “LGBT-Friendly” climate

Whitman has earned a five-star rating (out of five) in the 2012 Campus Pride LGBT-Friendly Campus Climate Index (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender), which is designed to help colleges and universities “improve their LGBT campus life and ultimately shape the educational experience to be more inclusive, welcoming and respectful of LGBT and Ally people,” according to the organization’s website. Staff and faculty news briefs

Helen Kim and Noah Leavitt

Helen Kim, associate professor of sociology, and husband Noah Leavitt, assistant dean for student engagement, were recently featured in a New York Times profile looking at their lives as an Asian American/Jewish couple who also study marriages between partners of Asian and Jewish descent. Titled, “A Couple Studies, and Lives, Jewish-Asian Intermarriage,” the story appeared in the On Religion section last Friday, June 15. It explores the couple’s research on how Asian and Jewish heritages coexist within a growing number of marriages, and how the Asian American and Jewish communities share a commitment to “tight-knit families, hard work, and educational advancement,” as the pair wrote in their recent study. The story also references a number of other Jewish-Asian “power couples,” including most recently Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook and his wife Priscilla Chan. Read the full story HERE.

Michael Quiner

Michael Quiner, WCTS director of enterprise technology, was quoted in an article in Virtual Strategy Magazine that spotlights Whitman as a leader in dealing with “a mountain of paper documents in the student admission process.” Quiner worked with the admission team to implement a software system called Document Locator that not only adds the efficiency of working online but also contributes to sustainability by enabling a paperless process. Quoting the article: “Whitman wants to get offers in the hands of students as quickly as possible. Document Locator has taken our admissions review process completely paperless, putting files in the hands of the Admissions Committee right away so that decisions can be made and offers for admission get out sooner,” Quiner commented. Michael QuinerBrien Sheedy, OP director, recently returned from a trip to Mount Hood with two OP interns, Katie Lei ’12, who is the summer trips intern, and Adam Michel ’12, Scrambles coordinator. Each summer, student interns have the opportunity to choose a trip or training session for themselves, and this year they chose to climb Mount Hood with Sheedy. “The weather was great and it was a great day,” he reports.

The Outdoor Program is offering three different trips this summer, which are open to faculty and staff as well as community members. All trips are designed to accommodate beginners; some very basic training or experience is recommended to participate in the rock climbing trip. Saturday, June 30, 3 p.m. - midnight
Pack a dinner and head to the Palouse River for some relaxed sea kayaking at sunset under the nearly-full moon.

Rock Climbing Day Trip to Spring Mountain, $40
Saturday, July 14, 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.
This all-day adventure includes a short hike to the cliff and rock climbing routes for both beginning and advanced climbers. Learning how to top-rope climb and belay before the trip is recommended.

White Water Rafting on the Deschutes, $50
Friday, July 27, 3 p.m. - Saturday, July 28, 8 p.m.
This trip includes a night of camping, meals for Saturday and some class II and III rapids on the Deschutes River in Central Oregon.

Stress reduction workshop offered this fall

Staff and faculty are invited to take part in a new stress reduction workshop aimed at helping participants more effectively balance hectic schedules and busy lives with their physical and emotional well-being. Sharon Kaufman-Osborn, counselor, who has studied and experienced the benefits of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), is coordinating the one-and-a-half-day workshop with instructor Brant Rogers, a certified MBSR teacher and yoga instructor at Yoga Hillsboro. The workshop will focus on mindfulness meditation and other techniques and will include quiet sitting, walking, gentle yoga and brief instructional presentations.

The workshop takes place on campus Friday, Sept. 21 and Saturday, Sept. 22. Participants must commit to attending both portions of the workshop. There is a registration fee of $15 per person, which covers a custom learning manual and a four-track CD with guided instructions by Rogers. Interested?
