Dreams come true: Glover Alston Center opens

More than six years in the planning, dreaming and making, the Glover Alston Center is a resource to facilitate Whitman’s commitment to sustaining a diverse community. MLK Day marked the official opening of the center, which provides a space for all members of the Whitman community to visit with the ultimate goal of extending social networks and increasing awareness of difference on campus.

Attendees of the Jan. 18 open house expressed excitement for the facility itself and appreciated the building’s colorful décor, which represents a variety of spices – to reflect international color and flavor.

All Whitman students, staff and faculty are invited to visit and use the Glover Alston Center. Contact the Intercultural Center at x5596 to reserve a space. While the Intercultural Center will contribute to the oversight of the Glover Alston Center's operations, the Intercultural Center office will remain in Reid Campus Center in its current location.

The naming recognizes Trustee Kari Glover ’72 and her husband, Thaddas L. Alston, for their interest and involvement in and support of advancing and promoting Whitman’s diversity and helping the campus to embrace and serve the ideals of a multi-cultural community.

More moves than a checkerboard for president’s and provost’s staff

Things look different in the president’s and provost’s offices these days following some changes over the winter break and an improved physical layout.

Tom Callister, associate dean of faculty and professor of education, has moved to Mem 311, formerly occupied by Pete Reid.

Susan Bennett, administrative assistant in the office of the provost, has moved from the president’s reception area to Callister’s former office, which has been reconfigured with a new entry door for the provost’s office.

Maggi Banderas, events assistant in the president’s office, has moved to a more welcoming “front and center” location in the president’s reception area to help greet and direct visitors to the president, provost, and dean of students offices.

Jennifer Casper, executive assistant, has moved closer to the south wall of the president’s office reception area to open up the space and help create some additional seating for visitors.

You are welcome to stop by and see the new layout. Special thanks go to the physical plant staff and WCTS for helping with the various moves. OP hosts Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour Jan. 26

Once again, Cordiner Hall should be packed with mountain adventure film-lovers as the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour comes to Walla Walla. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the program starts at 7 p.m. Admission is free for Whitman students, faculty, and staff with valid IDs. Otherwise, adult tickets are $10, and kids 12 and under are $5.

Known as one of the most prestigious mountain festivals in the world, the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour has stops planned in about 285 communities and 30 countries across the globe. This year’s tour features a collection of the most inspiring and thought-provoking action, environmental, and adventure mountain films. Traveling from remote landscapes and cultures to up close and personal with adrenaline-packed action sports, the 2009/2010 World Tour is an exhilarating and provocative exploration of the mountain world. The Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour is produced by Mountain Culture at The Banff Centre and features award-winning films and audience favorites from approximately 300 films entered in the annual festival in Banff. Faculty Accomplishments

Frank Dunnivant, associate professor of chemistry, presented a plenary address to the American Chemical Society in Puerto Rico last semester. The presentation featured seven research and educational software packages and two new Internet eTextbooks that were created by 17 students over the past 11 years. More recently, the Journal of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry accepted a paper by five students and Dunnivant that summarized a five-year research project. The paper describes a model for predicting the release of pollutants from dredged sediments, which has been the goal of many researchers since the early 1980s. Dunnivant would like to especially acknowledge the efforts of Elliot Anders ’01 and Jake Ginsbach ’09 in all of these publications.

Robert Sickels, associate professor of rhetoric and film studies, currently in Hong Kong as a Senior Fulbright Scholar, reports that his latest film, “Walla Walla Wiffle,” has been broadcast on Seattle and Walla Walla PBS stations. It will air again locally on KCTS Jan. 21 at 9:51 p.m., Jan. 24 at 4:45 p.m. and Jan. 29 at 11:50 p.m. Also, the Portland Trailblazers recently held a wiffle ball night and screened the film in its entirety in HD on the Jumbotron before the game. New scanning electron microscope gets front-page coverage

In case you missed the Jan. 18 edition of the Walla Walla Union-Bulletin, Whitman’s new scanning electron microscope (SEM) got front-page coverage. The article focused on the research of Courtney Porter ’10 and her professor, Kirsten Nicolaysen, assistant professor of geology. Also, one of the three photos (pictured here) features strands of hair from Rachna Sinnott ’93, director of foundation and corporate relations, and Michelle Shafer, lab and imaging coordinator. Comings and Goings

Whitman welcomes Emiley Jensen to the Penrose Library staff, as a new cataloging assistant, and bids a partial farewell to John Porchowsky, project engineer, who will continue some part-time temporary work for the Physical Plant over the next couple of months.

G. Thomas Edwards Lecture: Zahi Zalloua, associate professor of foreign languages and literatures (French), delivers the G. Thomas Edwards Lecture. "Fidelity to the Unruly, or Reading Literature Ethically." Prof. Zalloua’s talk discusses recent trends in ethical criticism, exploring alternative ways of conceptualizing the relation between ethics and literature, ways that foreground the experience of aesthetic otherness in the event of reading. 7:30 p.m., Kimball Theatre, Hunter Conservatory.
