Robert Sickels receives Fulbright award

Robert Sickels, associate professor of rhetoric and film studies, has been named a 2010 Senior Fulbright Scholar. From January to May, Sickels will be affiliated with Hong Kong Baptist University, where he will lecture and research. He chose to apply for a Fulbright in Hong Kong because he is fascinated by Hong Kong cinema and its major influence on young American directors and filmmakers. His work intends to “reach a better understanding on how cultural circumstances in seemingly disparate countries half a world apart could nevertheless lead to what are spiritually very similar movements.” He then will bring his broadened understanding and experiences into his Whitman classes.

“Living in a city of seven million people will be a dramatically different existence from that which I’ve grown accustomed, and I just can’t wait to have the experiences that will come with being immersed in something so far afield from life in Walla Walla,” Sickels said. “In addition to my research, I’ll likely be giving lectures in mainland China on behalf of the Fulbright Program and that’ll be awesome as well!”

Bon Appétit is “certifiably” great

Perhaps similarly to how the college is accredited according to a set of standards, Bon Appétit has received affirmation of all it does to achieve its mission at the highest standards. The company bases its work on a set of standards called “Great Expectations,” which is published in a 40-page book. Great Expectations is the highest level of recognition within Bon Appétit and is “what every location strives for,” says Roger Edens, Whitman’s Bon Appétit general manager.

“There are standards for every aspect of what we do, from catering to espresso bars as well as the Cafe, Prentiss and Jewett,” Edens reports. “Sections of the book include Food Standards, Healthy Cooking and Sanitation and Safety. Becoming certified required months of preparation, staff training and a few visits by our district manager in Seattle. Then there was an inspection and an unannounced visit by our director of marketing and a chef from our corporate offices in Palo Alto. The two inspectors spent the day and went through each location on campus reviewing the operation and records.”

Mark Swenson, Bon Appétit’s regional vice president, traveled to campus from Portland to present the certification.

Try this Thanksgiving treat – and send holiday recipes to Patti Moss!

Just in time for Thanksgiving, Patti Moss, Division III assistant and publisher of the upcoming "What’s Cooking at Whitman" cookbook, shares one of her traditional family recipes: Pumpkin Roll. Now is a great time to share your recipes, too! While preparing for your holiday meal, set aside your favorite recipes to submit for publication in the Whitman Cookbook. The Pumpkin Roll recipe below is a “family favorite at this time of year," Moss says. "It offers the flavors of pumpkin, cinnamon and spices and is a nice alternative to pumpkin pie."

Pumpkin Roll

3 eggs
2/3 c. canned pumpkin
1/2 c. sugar
3/4 c. flour
1 tsp. lemon juice
1 tsp. baking powder
2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. ginger
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. salt

In large mixing bowl, beat eggs for five minutes. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Pour into a well-greased 11-by15-inch jelly roll pan. Bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes. Turn out on paper towels. Lightly cover with powdered sugar. Roll up in paper towels like a jelly roll. Allow to cool. When cool, unroll and spread with filling.


8 oz. cream cheese
4 tbsp. softened margarine
1 c. powdered sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla

Mix until smooth and creamy. Add 1/2 cup chopped nuts. Spread on pumpkin roll. Re-roll, place on serving plate. Refrigerate until serving. Slice 1/2- to 1-inch wide and serve.

Flu update

There were only five new ILI cases reported at the Welty Health Center last week. As reported in the media, there is still no news about wide availability of the vaccine in our area.

Holiday Barrel tasting is the weekend of Dec. 7, and Whitman’s Delta Gamma chapter reminds staff and faculty about Anchor Drive. You taste wine, they drive. The suggested donation is $20/hour/car. Wilderness first responder courses offered through OP

Wilderness First Responder medical education courses will be offered Jan. 8-17, 2010, and March 13-22, 2010, on campus through the Outdoor Program. While the program dates are months away, these programs are very popular, and OP Director Brien Sheedy encourages early enrollment. Tuition is $575 for Whitman students and staff. Adult/child CPR certification is included.
