Art Outside the Box: A new Spring art show and reception

Think outside the box and get started on your art projects now! Art Outside the Box welcomes traditional or non-traditional forms of expression. Go to the Penrose website to complete your art exhibit form and view photos of last year's exhibits. The application deadline is Friday, Mar. 7.

The reception will be held at 4pm on Mar. 28 and the public exhibits will run from Mar. 29 to Apr. 6 in the Penrose Library lobby.

Baker Center to offer lunch service

Starting Monday, Jan. 27, Baker Center Cafe will open 11:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for lunch. Normal days of operation are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday when classes are in session.

Fixed Price: $7 per meal
Faculty and staff using Flex Dollars are exempt from sales tax, while cash and department charge sales are subject to tax. Each week you will find a fresh menu featuring a variety of hot panini sandwiches and a number of salads along with a daily choice of two soups and dessert bites.

Menu for the week of Jan. 27:

  • Apple Rosemary Chicken Panini (marinated chicken breast, brie cheese, rosemary apple jam and arugula served on house-made focaccia bread)
  • Caprese Panini (sliced fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced tomatoes, fresh basil leaves and lemon aioli served on house-made focaccia bread)
  • Beef and Bleu Panini (Upper Dry Creek Ranch roast beef, Rogue River bleu cheese, horseradish sauce and caramelized onions served on house-made focaccia bread)
  • Black Bean & Green Chile Quesadilla (marinated and grilled chicken breast, black beans, green chilis, jack cheese served with sour cream and salsa)
  • A choice of two made-from-scratch soups daily (one vegetarian or vegan) served with toppings
  • Winter Wheat Berry Beet Salad (beets, dried fruits, wheat berries with pomegranate vinaigrette)
  • White Bean & Roasted Vegetable Salad (spinach, purple cabbage, roasted root vegetables, white beans with creamy parmesan cheese dressing)
  • Mixed Greens Salad (with assorted vegetable toppings, croutons, sunflower seeds, and a selection of three dressings which will rotate weekly)
  • Basket of Seasonal and Local (when available) Whole Fruit
  • Dessert Bite (will change daily)
  • Ice water, seasonal aqua fresca, assorted soda & coffee

Associate Professor of Politics Jeanne Morefield is preparing to publish her next book, "Empires Without Imperialism: Anglo-American Decline and the Politics of Deflection," in February. Morefield's book analyzes two key moments of liberal imperial thinking (at the beginning and end of the twentieth century) to unearth a set of common intellectual dispositions and theoretical attitudes shaped by the problem of empire. The book was recently mentioned in a "Chronicle of Higher Education" article.

What is a Workout?

A workout is 25 percent perspiration and 75 percent determination. Stated another way, it is one part physical exertion and three parts self-discipline. Doing it is easy once you get started.

A workout makes you better today than you were yesterday. It strengthens the body, relaxes the mind and toughens the spirit. When you work out regularly, your problems diminish and your confidence grows.

A workout is a personal triumph over laziness and procrastination. It is the badge of a winner - the mark of an organized, goal-oriented person who has taken charge of his or her destiny.

A workout is a wise use of time and an investment in excellence. It is a way of preparing for life's challenges and proving to yourself that you have what it takes to do what is necessary.

A workout is a key that helps unlock the door to opportunity and success. Hidden inside each of us is an extraordinary force. Physical and mental fitness are the triggers that can release it.

A workout is a form of rebirth. When you finish a workout, you don't simply feel better, you feel better about yourself.
