The Raymond Carver site started as an idea of mine late one night while sitting around without a lot to do. I was enrolled in a class on Raymond Carver, taught by Tess Gallagher at Whitman College. As I sat around that night, bored, I decided to see what the web could tell me about Ray.
Surprisingly, I found very little. And what I did find was mostly unpolished, even inaccurate. This started me thinking, and later that night I found myself sketching a rough outline of what I thought a good page on Ray should include.
After talking with Tess, I decided to create the page to fulfill the requirement of a "creative final project" in the class. As I continued to work on the page, it seemed to develop a life of its own. What started as an idea on Friday night became an obsession. Soon, entire Friday and Saturday nights were spent working on the page. It developed from there and is now flying on its own.
The Raymond Carver site is the result of lots of help from many people. First and foremost, I would like to thank Tess Gallagher for her encouragement and support. She provided all the pictures you see from her own family scrapbook, offered advice, even proofread the biography and chronology pages.
Also, I would like to thank Professor Bill Stull, who gave permission to re-publish his excellent biography and chronology on Ray.
Hiromi Hashimoto, a student from Japan, deserves many thanks for allowing me to re-publish her master’s thesis, "Trying to Understand Raymond Carver’s Revisions." The thesis deals with Ray as a precisionist, not a minimalist, and provides a wealth of information to this point.
Brent Bryan deserves thanks for lending me his invaluable time and html knowledge; Marianne Brady, for allowing me to use her photographs; and finally, all the students in Behind the Scenes.
