Rockefeller Oral Communication and Multimedia Initiative
Content Specific Workshops
Call for Proposals

One component of the Rockefeller Oral Communication and Multimedia Initiative funds two content specific workshops -- one in each of the two years of the grant. The purpose of the workshops is to focus on the incorporation of oral communication skills and the use of various technologies as teaching tools in specific subject areas. The grant provides $5,000 in stipends for faculty participation and $5,000 for external consultants.

One example of a workshop project could include bringing a visiting scholar to campus to work with the faculty in a department, or a group of interdisciplinary faculty, on the use of oral communication in teaching specific disciplinary content. Another example could involve sending one member of a department to another institution who, upon return, would share with his or her colleagues what had been learned elsewhere.

Departments and interdisciplinary groups of faculty are invited to submit workshop proposals and budgets for the 2000 - 2001 school year. Selection will managed by the Dean and the Committee of Division Chairs, and will be based on the criteria of applicability and commitment to improving teaching in the specific content area, and the incorporation of a strong oral communication skills component.

Deadline for applications is Oct. 6, 2000. Proposals and further questions should be addressed to Tom Callister.
