Welcome to the Economics Department of Whitman College. Economics is the study of how people and societies allocate scarce resources to satisfy their wants. The discipline of economics has a particular value in a student’s liberal education for many reasons. It fosters analytical thinking, a facility with quantitative methods, the ability to express ideas in written and oral presentation, and an appreciation of broad historical, social and political forces that affect human behavior. Further, economics offers a way of examining real world events that is helpful in preparing students to be effective global citizens. In short, economics introduces a way of thinking that can be used to form a deeper understanding of historical and current affairs.
