OF DEBATE

THROUGH WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 19. 2. DEBATE AT ONE OF FOUR TOURNAMENT OPTIONS NW Warmup Sept 21-23 Lewis and Clark Oct 11-14 UPS Oct 26-28 (JV only) On Campus as scheduled. Decision of which you go to is by Jim Hanson but
with your input. 3. PARTICIPATE AT THE INTRAMURAL
COMPETITION ON NOV. 29, 4:20PM TO 6PM ·
121 students who do not attend the class regularly,
do their practice, participate in the IM debates, and/or one of the four
tournament options may not receive an A. Note: You must be enrolled in Rhetoric
121, 221, 222, or 401/402 in order to participate in the Whitman Forensics

Course Description This course involves preparing,
practicing, and competing in parliamentary debate, impromptu or extemp or
platform, and assisting the forensics program including with tournaments that
we host. Your grade is based on completing the following items. 222

program including with tournaments that we host. Your grade is based on
completing the following items. · ATTEND TUESDAY CLASS EACH WEEK, 4:15 TO
6:15PM when scheduled Be at the class on time. ·
CHECK YOUR
E-MAIL TWICE EACH DAY Check and respond to e-mail messages at least twice a
day. · COMPETE AT 2 TOURNAMENTS: 221: DO PARLIAMENTARY DEBATE and when
offered IMPROMPTU OR EXTEMP OR PLATFORM. 222: DO POLICY DEBATE. Each
tournament less than 2 is 1 full grade drop. Talk
with Jim if you have concerns. Note: You must be enrolled in Rhetoric
121, 221, 222, or 401/402 in order to participate in the Whitman Forensics
program and participation at tournaments is
dependent on following the Team Participation
Guidelines. ·

TIMES COMPLETE A PARLI CASE AND 2 TIMES COMPLETE EXTEMP ARTICLES 3
PARLI CASES—3 TO 5 PAGES LONG 1) GOV: a parli case with
an outlined set of arguments, add-ons and answers to expected opp. arguments
for the MG speech; 2) OPP: oppositions
strategies with outlined arguments, responses to the gov
advantages/arguments, off-case positions, etc. PLACE
YOUR CASE INTO THE “10A-PUT CASES HERE FOR NIGEL” AND MAKE SURE YOUR NAME IS
PART OF THE FILE NAME. DUE
TUESDAY, THE WEEK BEFORE PARLI TOURNAMENTS (3 total Parli
cases; total of 10 to 15 pages). 2
SETS OF EXTEMP FILES—20 ARTICLES You will be assigned
questions/areas to research. 20 ARTICLES NEEDED, with key lines/sections
highlighted/underlined. YOU SHOULD CHOOSE INDEPTH
ARTICLES that are at least 2 or 3 pages long. MOST IMPORTANTLY, YOUR ARTICLES
SHOULD ALLOW YOU TO ANSWER A QUESTION LIKELY TO BE GIVEN. PLACE
YOUR CASE INTO THE “10B-PUT EXTEMP ARTICLES HERE FOR NIGEL” MAKE
SURE YOUR NAME IS PART OF THE FILE NAME. DUE
THE WEEK BEFORE TOURNAMENTS WITH IE’S (2 sets of Extemp Articles: Total 40
articles). 2

in the effort—produce a quality product on time: you are headed to an A. · 222: PREPARE POLICY RESEARCH ASSIGNMENTS You are expected to COMPLETE A 30+ PAGE RESEARCH ASSIGNMENT AS ASSIGNED ON TUESDAY
BEFORE EACH TOURNAMENT. 2

PREP
SESSIONS HAPPEN TUESDAYS BEFORE TOURNAMENTS. If your research is done, be at the Prep Session for
1 hour. If your research is not done, be at the Prep Session
for 4 hours. ·
6 HOURS
PREP EACH WEEK --Engage in drills, Prepare arguments in the Prep Rooms for 6 hours each
and every week until the last tournament of the semester is completed. --Take care of
homework, test preparation, papers, etc. so that they do not interfere. 6
HOUR PREPING IS CLASS TIME AND IT IS REQUIRED. Late for two drills without notice
of reasonable excuse: 1/3 grade drop. Don’t show up or don’t put in an
effort in drills: 1/3 grade drop. Put
in the effort—come to drills on time and participate fully—building and
growing: you are headed to an A. Same
thing goes for Prep Sessions. ·
ASSIST IN
THE MANAGEMENT OF THE TOURNAMENTS THAT WHITMAN HOSTS You must do 2 things to assist with the Whitman
hosted Tournament: 1. Do a job for the tournament as directed
by Jim Your
job usually will be during the week of the tournament including inputting
room information, setting up chairs, helping the tab room, etc. 2.
You will also
work during the tournament. HS
Tournament Nov. 1 – 3 (at all times). WNPT
Nov. 17 – 18 (policy only for short times) Classic
Tournament Feb. 15-17 (policy only for short times). NW
Rockies Feb. 23-24 (parli ony
for short times). You will NOT be excused from your tournament
obligations for parties, dances, visits with parents, going to movies,
concerts, friends, etc. You may not
leave early without permission. You will be excused from your
obligation to the tournament ONLY for emergencies, classes and scheduled
work. Excuses including for illnesses,
deaths in the family, etc. are granted but you will still have team service.
Failure to work at the tournament or to leave early or arrive late without
excuse will mean team service at 150% of the time you miss. · JUDGE AT THE INTRAMURAL DEBATE CONTEST THURSDAY,
NOV. 29, 4:20 TO 6PM. THURSDAY,
APR. 11, 4:20 TO 6PM. --Get a Debater and
Judge: $30 honorarium. --Get a Debater and don’t judge? $15 and 1 hour team service
for each missed round (unless excused by Jim) --No Debater? No money and you Judge or Debate. --No Debater and you don’t judge? No money and 1 hour
team service for each missed round (unless excused by Jim) ·
ENGAGE IN
FOUR HOURS OF TEAM SERVICE Help with the 121 class,
Team Projects; you can pick from opportunities that Jim provides. Often done
after thanksgiving break in the fall; after spring break in the spring. Deadline
for Team Service is Reading Day. If late, you’ll have four additional days to
complete 150% of your remaining team service time. For
each hour of team service not completed, your grade drops 1/3. When
you help the team out and complete your team service, you are headed for an
