Professional Development Accounts:  A 2-year Pilot

GUIDELINES:

Each tenured and tenure-track, SSRA/Forensic-track, and full-time continuing member of the instructional faculty, not supported by start-up funds, contract travel, or income from endowed chairs will be provided with an account of $2,000 each year to support teaching and research. These funds will support legitimate professional expenses (faculty travel for research/creative activity, professional meetings, journal subscriptions, memberships in professional societies, research materials - books, software, supplies).  The funds may not normally be used to support student research, computer purchases, and teaching materials otherwise supported by departmental or program budgets.  Equipment purchased with the funds will become property of the College.  Allowable expenses include a maximum food allowance of $75/day; plane airfare for coach rate only; mileage reimbursed at current rate; and up to $50/day for child care expenses. 

By request, funds not used during the fiscal year may roll over to the next fiscal year. If you wish to rollover your PDA funds to 2009-2010 academic year, please submit a request to the Office of the Provost and Dean of the Faculty, c/o Susan Bennett either as an e-mail attachment or by campus mail. Rollover requests should be submitted no later than May 1, 2009. Please be specific in your request. If you received additional funding, you will NOT be allowed to rollover PDA or ASID funds. 

In keeping with the College's desire to provide additional start-up support for new tenure-track faculty, individuals who began contracts in September 2007 will receive $3,000 for the 2008-09 and 2009-10 academic years.  Faculty who began contracts in September 2006 will receive an account of $3,000 for the 2008-09 academic year.

The Professional Development Accounts will be administered through the Provost and Dean of the Faculty Office and the contact point for reimbursement will be Susan Bennett.  The Travel Reimbursement form should be used to detail your expenditures and to request reimbursement. All requests for reimbursement should be reported in US currency. In order to accurately determine availability of funding, please submit receipts within 30 days of the completion of your travel. 

The ASID Committee will review requests and make recommendations for the following additional funds: 

Fund to Support Scholarship and Instructional Development 

Each year, approximately $50,000 will be awarded to proposals seeking support for scholarship and instructional development needs that exceed the use of the $2,000 professional development accounts. Normally, grants from this fund will be a maximum of $3,000.  The following activities are eligible for support: 

  1. Short-term independent research, including such items as travel, food/lodging, photocopying, secretarial expenses, and expendable supplies and minor equipment. Limited wages for student assistance in support of such research will also be considered. Travel support may be requested. Food and lodging may not exceed $1,500.  The fund will NOT support the following: books and software except in unusual, justifiable circumstances; major equipment; supplies not specific to the proposed work (e.g., paper).
  2. Additional conference attendance.  Faculty with accepted presentations will receive priority.  Request normally not to exceed $1,500.
  3. Formal study, other than study leading to a professional degree, in connection with a scholarly project.
  4. The typing of manuscripts, preparation of figures, and other costs associated with the preparation and publication of scholarly materials. These funds must be requested; they will not be provided automatically (see additional information below). Journal page charges are usually not eligible.
  5. Instructional development
    Funds in this category are to be allocated in support of activities that are in direct support of the faculty member's present or potential instructional responsibilities. In making its decision, the Committee will take into account the merit of the project, the relation of the project to the ordinarily expected development and updating of courses, the availability of funds from other sources, the use to which the applicant has put past grants, and the amount requested compared with the total amount of funds available. Thus, applicants should include sufficient justification and information for the Committee to make a reasonable decision.

International Scholarship and Research Fund

Approximately $20,000 will be available to support international research and creative activities.  Normally, grants will not exceed $3,500.  The following activities are eligible for support: 

A.      International conference attendance. Faculty with accepted presentations will receive priority.

B.       Short-term independent research, including such items as travel, food/lodging, photocopying, secretarial expenses, and expendable supplies and minor equipment. Limited wages for student assistance in support of such research will also be considered. Travel support may be requested. Food and lodging may not exceed $1,500.  The fund will NOT support the following: books and software except in unusual, justifiable circumstances; major equipment; supplies not specific to the proposed work (e.g., paper).

C.      Formal study, other than study leading to a professional degree, in connection with a scholarly project.

Application Deadlines:                                             

The following deadlines allow the use of designated accounts to coordinate with the College’s fiscal year, which runs from July 1 to June 30th annually.        

 
 

 

April 15 - projects to be completed between July 1 and October 31.

September 15 - projects to be completed between November 1 and March 31.

February 15 - projects to be completed after April 1 but prior to July 1.

Proposals should follow this format: 

  1. A brief description of the work and its significance; plus any potential benefit to you and/or students involved.
  2. Where the work is to be conducted and how long; plus justification for this location.
  3. Expenses expected (itemized with exact costs including taxes, etc., where feasible; otherwise give best estimates).
  4. Other support for this work and planned use of Professional Development Account funds.
  5. Results of previous work supported by ASID (if any). 

If you are requesting additional travel funds, the committee expects no more than $500 of your PDA funds to be designated for non-travel expenditures. In the absence of a specific designation, the committee will expect all of your PDA funds to be allocated to fund your travel.

The Committee will consider these criteria and the amount of funds requested compared with the total amount of funds available. The Committee may award expenses for named items only, or may award open grants to be used at the discretion of the grantee.


The Provost and Dean of the Faculty will consider requests for the following fund:

Support for Adjunct Assistant Professors and Instructors

An account in the amount of $10,000 will support requests from individuals in adjunct teaching positions and on the coaching staff.  The maximum normally supported will be $1,000. 

  1. Conference attendance.
  2. Short-term independent research, including such items as travel, food/lodging, photocopying, secretarial expenses, and expendable supplies and minor equipment.
  3. Formal study, other than study leading to a professional degree, in connection with a scholarly project.

Application Deadline:                                         

July 1 for projects to be completed before May 31 of the following year.

Proposals should follow this format:  

  1. A brief description of the work and its significance to your continued teaching at Whitman and impact on Whitman students.
  2. Where the work is to be conducted and how long; plus justification for this location.
  3. Expenses expected (itemized with exact costs including taxes, etc., where feasible; otherwise give best estimates).

Beginning July 1, 2008, mileage reimbursement is set at the IRS rate of .585 a mile. Please note; as this rate increases using a rental car becomes more cost effective than using a personal vehicle in many situations.
