Configuring and Using netFiles Folders on a Mac

First, what ARE netFiles Folders?

Technology Services provides netFiles as a means of storing your files on the network so that you can access them from any computer on campus or from an off campus location. There are several ways to connect to netFiles, and each of those ways has its own quirks.

netFiles Folders provide you with a way of accessing your files on your Mac as if they were stored on your Mac. That is, you can open files, save them, move, copy, etc. just as you are used to. The only major difference is that accessing your files will be somewhat slower with netFiles as compared to dealing with files on your computer's hard drive.

Setting Up netFiles Folders

First Time on netFiles

If you have never logged into netFiles, you need to login to netfiles web to create your account. To do this, go to  http://netfiles.whitman.edu and do the following:

  • Enter your user name in the box provided
  • Enter your network password (the password you use to start your computer) in the box provided
  • Click "Go"
  • Click "Logout"
  • Close the browser window

You are now ready to setup the netFiles folder

NOTE: To use netFiles Folders, you must be running Mac OS X 10.4 or higher.

What Version of Mac OS X am I running?

Configuring netFiles Folders

  1. From the Finder choose  Go >  Connect to Server...
  2. In the Server Address box, type  https://netfiles.whitman.edu/home/<username> (<username> is your network username).
  3. Click  Connect.
  4. At the prompt enter your network username and password. After a moment your netFiles home folder will open. A drive icon with your username will appear on the desktop
  5. To easily access netFiles again, drag the icon from the desktop with your username on it to the Dock. In the future, you may simply click the drive icon to access netFiles.

Note: Whenever you restart your computer or log off, you will have to re-establish a connection to netFiles. Do this simply by clicking the icon in the dock (either one you have created, or one Technology Services has put there for you).

Using netFiles Folders

Connecting

If you have an icon in the dock resembling the one on the left:

  1. Click it. After a moment your netFiles home folder will open.
  2. There is no step 2! Use netFiles as you would any other folder or resource. Double-click a file to open it, and you're on your way.

Saving

Once you are connected, you can edit and save files just as you normally would. When saving new files, (or when you choose "Save As...") choose the icon with your username from the left column to save to netFiles. This might not work with every program. If it does not work with the file you are trying to save, save the file to the desktop (or a similar location) first and then drag the file to netFiles Folders.
