EndNote is premium bibliographic citation management software for both Mac and Windows.
Whitman has arranged with the software vendor to make EndNote available campus-wide, to any current faculty, student, or staff member. In addition to installing EndNote on campus computers, it may be installed on faculty, staff, or student personally-owned or home computers. EndNote may only be installed and used by individuals who are currently at the College - it must be removed if you end your employment or your matriculation as a student.
First you will need to Connect to Whitman's Application File Server; use the information below during set-up. (Your Mac must be connected to the Whitman network by either an on-campus wired or wireless connection, or off-campus using Secure FTP (SFTP)). If you do not have existing expertise using SFTP, we strongly recommend you simply make sure you are on campus for your connection.
You've now connected to the APPS volume of the "WinApp" server. You should either see an icon on your desktop, or a new Finder window should open that shows "winapp.whitman.edu" listed in the left column.
Inside the winapp (or "Apps") icon, locate the folder labeled "Endnote X3 Mac" and open it (NOTE: X3 is the current version of the software at the time these instructions are being published. Pick the highest number in the list, as long as it still has "Mac" in its name (e.g., Endnote X4 Mac, etc). Open the folder.
Double-click to open the file labeled "EndNote X3 Site Installer.dmg" (or whatever "X-version" is the newest). This will tell your system to mount the EndNote X3 disk image on your system. A new window should open automatically. If this does not happen, go to your Desktop, and double-click on the icon labeled "EndNote X3 Installer".
Click and drag the EndNote X3 folder onto the "Applications" folder icon (both icons will be in the "EndNote" window) .
- Go to your Desktop.
- Right-click (or hold the Ctrl-key while clicking) the "EndNote X3 Installer" icon.
- From the fly-out menu, select Eject.
Go to the Finder's menubar, and select Go, then Applications. Find the EndNote X3 folder, open it, then launch the EndNote X3 program.
Accept all defaults.
To download the installer, you need a PC connected to the "Whitman domain" on the Whitman network. You are connected if, when you follow step #3 below--the computer has a list of "network drives" available (in addition to the computer hard drive [C]) at least partially resembling the list on the right.
First, you will need to Connect to Whitman's Application File Server; use the inforamtion below during set-up. (Your computer must be connected to the Whitman network by either an on-campus wired or wireless connection, or off-campus using Secure FTP (SFTP)). If you do not have existing expertise using SFTP, we strongly recommend you simply make sure you are on campus for your connection.
In the resulting list of your drives and folders, locate the drive labeled apps on 'winapp' -- it is probably your [J] drive.
Click once on that drive to highlight it and view the contents of that drive in the right portion of the window.
Locate the Endnote Install(PC) folder and open it (or, if you will be performing an installation on a different computer, drag the folder icon to another "drive" listed in the left portion of your 'Explorer' window in order to make a copy (such as a USB flash drive, an inserted blank CD, etc. Once at the computer to receive the install, continue the below steps, using your copy of the folder).
Double click the file titled ENX3Inst.msi.
Accept all the default buttons (about 6 Next buttons).
Choose either Run to launch the program and create your default EndNote library OR
Choose Finish to end setup and create your default EndNote library the next time you open the program.
Also in the Endnote Install (PC) folder is a full copy of the Windows EndNote X3 Manual, which may be helpful in figuring out the program. Paper copies of the Getting Started Guide are available for checkout from WCTS.
