Good maintenance of your computer involves keeping your software updated, having good security habits, and running the right programs to protect your computer.

Updates

Both your operating system and your software must be updated.  For Windows and Macintosh, see our information on Updating your Operating System. For Windows, you can also visit the Windows Update page which will check to see what updates you need and guide you in installing them.  For updating Microsoft Office software, go to the Microsoft Office Updates site, and select "Check for Updates". The original installation CD may be required. Contact WCTS if you need assistance updating Office or your other software.

Security Habits

Many security breaches can be avoided with careful computing.  WCTS has tips on avoiding identity theft, keeping your computer physically safe, maintaining passwords, email security, reasons to avoid firesharing, and backing up your data.  Of all of these, email security must be stressed.  Do not open attachments (including .doc or other recognizable files) from users you do not know.(maybe expand this section)

Security Software

Viruses, hackers and adware, oh my! Even a dilligent computer use can be exposed to dangerous programs.  Anti-Virus software and an enabled Firewall (resnet section) are essentials in keeping your computer protected.  Both are required before you can connect to the Whitman network.  See Installing Anti-Virus software and Using a Firewall for instructions and links to free or college-licensed downloads. Due to the growing prevalence of spyware and adware, Whitman also recommends installing an anti-spyware/anti-adware program. For additional data safety, see our section on Data Encryption.
