Obtaining Dial-in Access

Dial-in access requires a separate account from your standard Whitman account. If you have not obtained your dial-in username and password, do so at https://webapp.whitman.edu/dialin/.

What is Remote Access?

Remote Access is the software package built into your system that allows your Macintosh to connect to the campus network using a modem. It establishes what is known as a PPP (point-to-point protocol) connection, that allows applications such as Safari, Telnet, Mail, and Fetch to operate exactly as they would on a Macintosh connected directly to the campus network (limited only by the slower speed of a modem connection).

 Setting Up a New Location

  1. From the Apple menu, open System Preferences.
  2. Choose Network.
  3. Click the Location menu and choose New Location.
  4. Name your new location "Whitman Dialup" or whatever is meaningful to you.
  5. Click OK.

Configuring Your Modem

  1. Click the Configure menu and select the Advanced option.
    • Make sure only the modem option has a check next to it in the "On" column.
  2. Click the Configure menu again and select the Modem option.
  3. Click the TCP/IP tab.
    • In the Configure: menu box, select Using PPP as shown below

  8. Click the Save button to save your new configuration.

Solution

While attempting to connect, you receive the following message:
Error -6002
Connect script failed

The Network User Name and/or Network password you have used have been rejected. Double-check that both are entered correctly. If you are unsure of your Network User Name and password, come to the WCTS Help Desk in the WCTS Main Office, 168 Olin Hall (open Monday through Friday, 8-12,1-5).

Your modem doesn't appear on the Modem control panel's list

The modem script for your modem may be missing or not in the right location. Modem scripts should be located in the Modem Scripts folder, inside the Extensions folder, inside the System Folder.
The Remote Access ReadMe file in the Remote Access folder on your hard drive contains a list of all of the modem scripts included with Remote Access. If your modem does not appear on this list, you may wish to contact your modem manufacturer.

Why are the modem lines busy a lot? How many dial-in lines does Whitman have?

Whitman has 32 28.8kbps modem lines. With over 2,000 possible users of these lines, it's easy to see why all 32 are often busy during 'peak use' hours of the day (generally, this is during the late afternoon and evening).

After connecting successfully and using my computer for awhile, I lose my connection for no apparent reason.

You may have interference on your telephone line which breaks the connection. The slightest 'snap, crackle, or pop' on your telephone line is often enough to break your connection. Even having another member of your household lift the receiver of another telephone extension in the house that is on that same telephone line will usually terminate your connection.

Another possible problem can occur if you have "call waiting" on your telephone line. Any incoming calls will break your connection.

To disable call waiting while you are using your modem, open your Remote Access control panel, and add *70,, to the beginning of the telephone number. The *70,, causes call waiting to be disabled in the Walla Walla area. Other phone systems may require a different value.

You also may have reached your maximum connection time. Whitman limits a single dial-in session to a maximum of 4 hours. This is done to ensure everyone in the Whitman community fair access to a limited resource. If you have been connected continuously for 4 hours, you will be automatically disconnected by the modem server.
